What is Omega-3 (EPA/DHA Fish Oil)? Omega-3 fish oil provides EPA and DHA, two long-chain fatty acids found in cold-water fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines. These fats are called 'essential' because your body needs them to function but can only produce tiny amounts from plant-based sources — you have to get them from food or supplements. Most people in Western countries don't eat enough fatty fish, making supplementation one of the most practical nutritional gaps to fill. How does Omega-3 (EPA/DHA Fish Oil) work? EPA and DHA weave themselves into cell membranes throughout your body, making cells more flexible and better at communicating. EPA in particular helps dial down the inflammatory signals that drive chronic disease, while DHA is the structural backbone of brain tissue and the retina of your eye. Together they help regulate blood fat levels, support healthy blood vessel function, and keep inflammation from spiraling out of control. What forms does Omega-3 (EPA/DHA Fish Oil) come in? Triglyceride-form fish oil is absorbed about 70% better than the cheaper ethyl ester form and doesn't cause as much fishy burping. Enteric-coated capsules are a good pick if you're sensitive to aftertaste. Prescription concentrates like Vascepa (pure EPA) and Lovaza (EPA+DHA) deliver pharmaceutical-grade doses and have the strongest evidence for lowering very high triglycerides. Liquid fish oil can be easier to take in higher doses and tends to be fresh when refrigerated properly. Where it comes from: Inuit and coastal Japanese populations eating traditional diets rich in fatty fish showed remarkably low rates of heart disease despite high-fat diets, sparking landmark research in the 1970s by Danish scientists Bang and Dyerberg. Their observations led to decades of research that transformed fish oil from a folk food into one of the most studied supplements in the world.

Helps

What does Omega-3 (EPA/DHA Fish Oil) help with? High triglycerides: Omega-3s are one of the most effective natural tools for lowering triglycerides — blood fats that, when too high, raise heart disease risk. At doses of 2–4 grams of EPA+DHA per day, they can cut triglyceride levels by 20–50% , likely by slowing the liver's production of these fats and speeding up their clearance. Heart disease risk: Fish oil has long been associated with a healthier heart, and higher-dose EPA-specific supplementation has been shown to meaningfully reduce the risk of serious heart events in people who already have elevated triglycerides. It helps by calming arterial inflammation, making blood slightly less sticky, and stabilizing the rhythm of the heart. Depression and low mood: EPA appears to be the key player here — formulas with at least 60% EPA tend to work best. Fish oil helps regulate the brain chemicals and inflammatory signals involved in depression, and clinical trials show it can meaningfully improve mood, especially as a complement to standard antidepressant treatment. Joint pain and arthritis: Fish oil reduces the inflammatory chemicals that cause joint swelling and pain, particularly in rheumatoid arthritis. People taking it regularly often notice less morning stiffness and can sometimes lower their reliance on anti-inflammatory medications over time. Brain health and memory: DHA is the structural fat your brain is literally made of, and keeping levels topped up supports sharper thinking, better memory, and slower age-related cognitive decline. Higher DHA intake is consistently associated with lower dementia risk in population studies. Eye health (dry eyes / AMD): DHA is concentrated in the retina and is essential for sharp vision. Fish oil supplementation has shown benefits for dry eye symptoms and is associated with a lower risk of age-related macular degeneration — the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Inflammation and autoimmune conditions: By shifting the body's balance away from pro-inflammatory signals, omega-3s can calm overactive immune responses. People with lupus, psoriasis, Crohn's disease, and other inflammatory conditions often report benefit, and trials support modest but real anti-inflammatory effects. ADHD in children and adults: Children and adults with ADHD tend to have lower omega-3 levels than average, and supplementation — particularly higher-EPA formulas — has shown modest but consistent improvements in attention, hyperactivity, and behavioral symptoms across multiple trials. Anxiety: Clinical trials suggest that higher-dose omega-3 supplementation (2+ grams/day, especially EPA-rich) can reduce anxiety symptoms, likely by reducing neuroinflammation and supporting healthy neurotransmitter signaling. The effect is moderate but meaningful, especially alongside other treatments. Pregnancy support and infant brain development: DHA is critical for fetal brain and eye development, especially in the third trimester. Pregnant and breastfeeding women with adequate DHA intake consistently have babies with better cognitive and visual outcomes, making this one of the most well-supported uses of fish oil supplementation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
