Shoulder hurts when I lift my arm
You raise your arm and a sharp pain stops you short. Reaching for a high shelf or pulling on a coat can be the worst of it. With your arm down, the ache often fades to a dull throb.
One common reason is a swollen bursa. A bursa is a small sac of fluid that cushions the joint. When it puffs up, the space under your shoulder bone gets tight, so lifting pinches it.
This often starts after painting a ceiling, heavy lifting, or lots of throwing. Sleeping on that side can make the next day worse. Past shoulder strain and getting older both play a part.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your arm feels weak or you cannot lift it at all. Get same-day care for a hot, red, swollen shoulder with a fever, or for pain that starts right after a fall. Book a visit if the pain wakes you most nights, runs down your arm, or lasts more than two weeks.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies used for shoulder pain like this. Each has a grade showing how much research backs it, not a promise of results. Grades are low when the proof is thin, so ask your doctor before you try one.
