Swollen, squishy lump on my elbow
You bend your arm and there it is. A soft, squishy lump sits right at the point of your elbow. Some people say it looks like a small egg or half a golf ball.
The tip of your elbow has a thin sac under the skin. It is called a bursa, and it holds a little fluid. It can fill up and puff out after a knock, a fall, or hours of leaning on a hard desk.
The lump may not hurt much at all. Many people can still bend and straighten the arm just fine. Swelling can also creep up slowly, with no clear cause that you can name.
When to see someone
Get care the same day if the skin turns red and hot, you run a fever or chills, or pus leaks from a break in the skin. See a doctor soon if the pain is sharp, the elbow will not bend, or the lump came right after a hard fall. Call early if you have diabetes, or if you take drugs that lower your immune defence, since an infected bursa can turn serious fast.
Below are folk and home remedies that people have used for bursitis, the name for a swollen bursa. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise of results. Read the grades first, and talk with your doctor before you try anything on your elbow.
