Scary thoughts about harming my baby
The thought comes out of nowhere. You see your baby hurt, and you are the one doing it. Your stomach drops, and you shove it away.
Doctors call these intrusive thoughts. They are unwanted, and they scare you. That fear is the thing that sets them apart from a wish or a plan.
Broken sleep, big hormone shifts, and round-the-clock worry all feed them. They show up often with postpartum depression and anxiety. Having them does not make you a bad parent, and it does not mean you will act.
When to see someone
Call your doctor or midwife today if the thought feels like an urge, not fear. Same for thoughts of ending your life, or of not waking up. Call emergency services if you see or hear things others cannot, or feel your baby is not real.
The list below comes from our postpartum depression topic. Each item carries a grade for how strong the evidence is. A grade is not a promise, and none of this replaces care from your doctor.
