What is Hericium americanum (Bear's Head)? Hericium americanum, commonly called Bear's Head, is a cascading white fungus found on hardwood trees across North America. It belongs to the same Hericium genus as Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus), sharing many of the same bioactive compounds that have attracted serious scientific interest. While Lion's Mane has been more extensively studied, Bear's Head is increasingly recognized as a functional equivalent with its own profile of nerve-supportive and immune-modulating compounds. How does Hericium americanum (Bear's Head) work? Bear's Head works primarily by stimulating the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a protein your body needs to grow, maintain, and repair nerve cells. Its beta-glucans also activate immune cells and help regulate inflammation. Together, these actions support brain plasticity, nerve regeneration, and a healthy immune response. What forms does Hericium americanum (Bear's Head) come in? Dual-extract products (hot water plus alcohol extraction) capture both the water-soluble beta-glucans and the alcohol-soluble hericenones and erinacines. Whole dried mushroom and single hot-water extracts provide immune support but deliver fewer of the fat-soluble nerve compounds. Capsules and powders are the most convenient daily formats. Look for products that standardize to beta-glucan content and specify fruiting body vs. mycelium sourcing. Where it comes from: Hericium mushrooms have been foraged across North America by Indigenous communities and early settlers as both a food and a health remedy. In East Asian traditions, the closely related Hericium erinaceus has been used for centuries in Chinese and Japanese medicine for digestive and neurological support. Modern researchers began studying the Hericium genus seriously in the 1990s after the discovery of erinacines, and interest in North American species like H. americanum has grown alongside the broader Lion's Mane research wave.

Helps

What does Hericium americanum (Bear's Head) help with? Memory and brain fog: Bear's Head stimulates Nerve Growth Factor, which helps your brain form and maintain the connections needed for sharp memory and clear thinking. Regular use over several weeks has been linked to measurable improvements in recall and mental clarity in adults experiencing age-related cognitive changes. Nerve damage and neuropathy: The erinacines in Bear's Head encourage new nerve growth and may help repair damaged nerve pathways, which is why this mushroom is being studied for conditions involving numbness, tingling, or nerve injury. It supports both the central and peripheral nervous system. Anxiety and low mood: Some research with closely related Hericium species points to mild anti-anxiety and mood-lifting effects, likely tied to NGF production and its influence on the hippocampus — the brain region central to both memory and emotional regulation. Users often report feeling calmer and more emotionally steady after several weeks of use. Mild cognitive decline: Hericium mushrooms are among the most-studied natural compounds for slowing age-related cognitive decline. The NGF-boosting and anti-inflammatory actions help protect neurons from the kind of gradual damage that contributes to forgetfulness and slower thinking as we age. Focus and concentration: By supporting healthy nerve signaling and reducing neuroinflammation, Bear's Head may help sustain attention and mental stamina throughout the day — particularly useful for people dealing with chronic fatigue or brain fog. Immune system support: The beta-glucans in Bear's Head train and activate immune cells, helping your body respond more efficiently to threats. This kind of immune modulation is well-documented across the Hericium genus and is one of the reasons functional mushrooms are so widely used in integrative health. Digestive health: Hericium mushrooms have a traditional reputation for supporting stomach and gut health. Modern research suggests their polysaccharides may help nourish the gut lining and support a healthy microbiome, which in turn influences both immunity and mood. Fatigue and low energy: By reducing oxidative stress and supporting mitochondrial efficiency, Bear's Head may help ease the kind of persistent tiredness that comes from chronic stress or poor sleep — users often notice improved stamina and mental energy after consistent use. Age-related mental sharpness: Healthy aging of the brain depends on keeping neural connections strong and inflammation low — both areas where Bear's Head shows real promise. It is increasingly popular as a long-term brain longevity support taken alongside a healthy diet.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
