What is Brahmi? Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is a creeping herb that grows in wetlands across South Asia and has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It is classified as a 'medhya rasayana' — an Ayurvedic category of herbs specifically revered for sharpening the mind and preserving mental vitality. Modern science has confirmed many of its traditional uses, particularly around memory, learning, and anxiety. How does Brahmi work? Brahmi's main active compounds, the bacosides, help repair and regenerate nerve cells and support the communication pathways between neurons. It also dials down stress hormones, raises levels of calming brain chemicals like serotonin and GABA, and acts as a powerful antioxidant that protects brain tissue from everyday damage. Think of it as a gentle, long-term brain tonic rather than a quick stimulant. What forms does Brahmi come in? Standardized extracts (typically 300 mg at 55% bacosides, or 450 mg at 20% bacosides) are the most researched form and what clinical trials use. Traditional Ayurvedic preparations like Brahmi ghrita (Brahmi cooked into clarified butter) or Brahmi tea are also used, though exact dosing is harder to control. Capsules or powders are the most convenient modern formats. Where it comes from: Referenced in ancient Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, Brahmi was prescribed to enhance memory, promote longevity, and treat anxiety and epilepsy. Scholars and children alike were given Brahmi preparations to support learning. The name 'Brahmi' itself connects to Brahma, the Hindu deity of creation and knowledge, reflecting how central this herb was to mental cultivation in classical Indian tradition.

Helps

What does Brahmi help with? Brahmi is a small water plant native to India. Ayurvedic healers have used it for more than 3,000 years . They gave it to support the brain and the nerves. Memory and learning new material Good evidence — several human trials, with daily use for 8 to 12 weeks. In human trials, people had better word recall, faster thinking, and better verbal learning. The gains showed up after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. This is the best documented use in our files. Evidence grade B · Traditional tier T3 Focus, attention and restlessness in children with ADHD Early evidence — several studies in children, 12 to 16 weeks of use. Several studies in children with ADHD found better attention and less restlessness. Impulse control also improved. The children took Brahmi for 12 to 16 weeks . Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T3 Feeling anxious, wired or quick to snap under stress Early evidence — reports from regular users; mechanism work is lab-based. People who took Brahmi often reported feeling calmer and less reactive to stress. It did not make them drowsy. Lab work suggests it supports calming brain chemicals and lowers stress hormone activity. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T3 Memory slipping with age Early evidence — early human studies in older adults. Early studies in older adults found sharper recall. Some markers of decline moved more slowly. Lab work links this to Brahmi's antioxidant action and its calming effect on swelling in brain cells. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T3 Low mood Early evidence — some clinical evidence plus Ayurvedic tradition. Some clinical studies and long Ayurvedic use point to a lift in mood. Early research suggests Brahmi acts on serotonin, a mood chemical in the brain. Our files treat it as a support tool, not a stand-alone answer. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T3 Brain fog, burnout and mental tiredness Long traditional use · not yet tested in trials — user reports only, with no trial size on file. People with burnout or mental exhaustion reported clearer thinking after steady use. They also reported more mental stamina. No trial size or dose is on file for this use. Evidence grade D · Traditional tier T3 Trouble settling the mind at bedtime Long traditional use · not yet tested in trials — Ayurvedic tradition, plus its calming effect seen in other uses. Ayurvedic healers used Brahmi for sleep problems. No human sleep trial is on file. Its calming effect may help people whose sleep is broken by stress. Evidence grade insufficient · Traditional tier T3 Long-term inflammation in the brain and body Long traditional use · not yet tested in trials — lab studies on tissue, not people. Brahmi holds plant compounds called bacosides and flavonoids. In lab studies, these lowered inflammation, most of all in nerve tissue. Human trials on inflammation are not on file. Evidence grade insufficient · Traditional tier T3 Low thyroid support Long traditional use · not yet tested in trials — preliminary work only, with no human trial on file. Preliminary work suggests Brahmi helps the body turn T4 into the more active thyroid hormone, T3. This is one of its least studied uses. If you take thyroid medicine, talk to your doctor before you add it. Evidence grade insufficient · Traditional tier T3 What Brahmi has not been shown to do Brahmi has not been shown to replace prescribed ADHD medicine. It has not been shown to work on its own as an antidepressant. It has not been shown to give a quick boost; studies used daily doses over many weeks. It has not been shown to stop or reverse dementia; studies looked at recall and markers, not at the disease itself. It has not been shown to control seizures, and it must never replace prescribed anti-seizure drugs. It did not act as a sedative in studies, so it is not a knock-out sleep aid. It has not been shown to replace thyroid medicine. How to read this: Each use above carries its own grade. A means steady randomised trials in people. B means at

Where it comes from:

Referenced in ancient Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, Brahmi was prescribed to enhance memory, promote longevity, and treat anxiety and epilepsy. Scholars and children alike were given Brahmi preparations to support learning. The name 'Brahmi' itself connects to Brahma, the Hindu deity of creation and knowledge, reflecting how central this herb was to mental cultivation in classical Indian tradition.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Brahmi need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Brahmi?

  • Do not take Brahmi if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, since we lack safety data for these groups.
  • Do not take Brahmi with donepezil or rivastigmine (Alzheimer's drugs) unless your doctor says it is safe.
  • Avoid Brahmi if you take benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other calming or sleep drugs.
  • Do not drive or use machines if Brahmi makes you drowsy.
  • Do not start Brahmi if you take levothyroxine (a thyroid drug) without asking your doctor first.
  • Do not take Brahmi with drugs that need an exact blood level, such as heart or seizure drugs, unless your doctor agrees.
  • Do not take more than the label dose, because high doses can slow your heart rate.
  • Do not take Brahmi on an empty stomach; take it with a meal.
  • Do not give Brahmi to a child unless a doctor guides the dose.
  • Do not stack Brahmi with other brain supplements, such as racetams or lion's mane, without care.
  • Do not take Brahmi if you already have a slow pulse unless your doctor checks it first.

When should you see a doctor?

Stop Brahmi and call your doctor if your pulse feels very slow. Do the same if you feel faint, dizzy, or very sleepy during the day. Call the same day, not next week.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
