What is MCT Oil? MCT oil is a refined fat extracted primarily from coconut oil, concentrated to deliver medium-chain triglycerides — a type of fat your body handles very differently from the long-chain fats in most foods. Unlike regular dietary fats, MCTs skip normal fat digestion and go straight to the liver, where they're rapidly converted into usable energy or ketones. This makes them a uniquely fast-burning fuel source favored by athletes, keto dieters, and anyone looking for a clean cognitive boost. How does MCT Oil work? Because MCTs are shorter in chain length, they don't require bile salts or complex digestion — they're absorbed directly through the gut wall and shuttled to the liver via the portal vein. The liver quickly converts them into ketones, which the brain and muscles can use as immediate fuel — even when you're not on a strict ketogenic diet. This rapid conversion also means MCTs produce less tendency for fat storage compared to long-chain fats. What forms does MCT Oil come in? Liquid oil is the most potent and versatile form — easy to add to coffee, smoothies, or dressings. Powder forms are travel-friendly and easier on digestion for beginners. Capsules are convenient but require higher doses to match liquid amounts. For maximum ketone output and cognitive effect, unflavored liquid oil (especially pure C8) is the gold standard. Where it comes from: MCTs were originally developed in the 1950s as a clinical nutritional tool for patients who couldn't absorb normal dietary fats — including those with cystic fibrosis and other malabsorption conditions. They entered the mainstream wellness space in the early 2010s alongside the ketogenic diet revival and 'bulletproof coffee' culture, and have since become one of the most widely used performance and cognitive supplements globally.

Helps

What does MCT Oil help with? Mental clarity and brain fog: MCTs rapidly produce ketones, which the brain can use as an alternative fuel to glucose. Many people report sharper focus and reduced mental fog within an hour of taking MCT oil, especially in the morning or during a fast. Energy and fatigue: Because MCTs bypass normal fat digestion and convert quickly to energy, they provide a faster, cleaner fuel boost than most dietary fats. Athletes and low-carb dieters often use them as a pre-workout or mid-day pick-me-up without the crash of stimulants. Weight loss and appetite control: MCTs have been shown to increase feelings of fullness and may modestly raise the number of calories burned throughout the day. They appear to work partly by boosting levels of hormones that signal satiety, making it easier to eat less without feeling deprived. Ketogenic diet support: MCT oil makes reaching and maintaining ketosis significantly easier — it raises blood ketone levels even when overall carbohydrate intake isn't ultra-low. This allows more dietary flexibility for people following therapeutic or weight-loss ketogenic protocols. Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline: The brain in Alzheimer's disease struggles to use glucose efficiently, but it can still use ketones as fuel. Supplementing with MCT oil raises ketone levels enough to partially compensate for this glucose deficit, and some studies have shown meaningful improvements in memory and cognitive scores. Epilepsy (drug-resistant): The ketogenic diet is a well-established treatment for seizure disorders, and MCT oil has been used as a modified approach to induce the same ketogenic state with somewhat less dietary restriction. Clinical protocols using MCT-based ketogenic diets have shown seizure reduction in children who don't respond well to medication. Athletic performance: MCTs can serve as an easily accessible fuel source during endurance exercise, potentially sparing muscle glycogen and supporting fat adaptation. Some endurance athletes use them before or during longer training sessions to extend performance without heavy carbohydrate loading. Blood sugar balance: MCT oil doesn't raise blood sugar or require insulin for processing, making it a useful fat source for people managing diabetes or insulin resistance. Some research suggests it may improve insulin sensitivity over time when used as part of a reduced-carbohydrate diet. Gut health and candida overgrowth: Caprylic acid (C8), the dominant MCT in quality oils, has demonstrated antifungal properties that may help control Candida overgrowth in the gut. It's been used traditionally and clinically as a natural antifungal support alongside dietary changes.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
