What is Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to? Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to (SKRBT) is an 11-herb classical Kampo formula with roots in the ancient Chinese medical text 'Shang Han Lun' (Treatise on Cold Damage), written around 200 CE. It was formally adopted into Japanese Kampo medicine and today is one of the most widely prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan, available as standardized granules (TJ-12) under national health insurance. The formula uniquely blends plant roots, a medicinal mushroom, fossilized minerals, and shellfish to address what Kampo practitioners call 'excess in the upper body' — a state of nervous agitation, insomnia, and cardiovascular tension. How does Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to work? The formula works through several complementary pathways: bupleurum root helps regulate the body's stress response and supports healthy cortisol patterns, while dragon bone and oyster shell (both rich in calcium and trace minerals) are thought to anchor and calm excitable nervous activity. Poria mushroom and ginseng support energy and adrenal resilience, and cinnamon bark helps ease cardiovascular tension and improve circulation. Together these ingredients appear to modulate stress hormones, calm overactive nervous system activity, and support healthy blood pressure regulation. What forms does Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to come in? In Japan, SKRBT is most commonly available as pre-measured granule packets (Tsumura TJ-12) dissolved in hot water — these are the standardized, clinically studied forms. Outside Japan, it may be found as loose dried herb blends for decoction, or in capsule and tablet form from TCM suppliers. Granules offer the most consistency in dosing and are preferred for research and clinical use. Where it comes from: This formula originates from the 'Shang Han Lun,' one of the oldest and most influential texts in East Asian medicine, compiled around 200 CE by Zhang Zhongjing. Japanese Kampo physicians adapted and refined it over centuries, and it became a cornerstone formula for anxiety, heart palpitations, and what was described as 'mind-body disharmony.' Today it remains one of the top 20 most prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan, supported by modern clinical trials and a national health insurance listing.

Helps

What does Saiko-ka-ryukotsu-borei-to help with? Anxiety and nervousness: SKRBT has been studied and used clinically in Japan specifically for anxiety — particularly the kind that shows up as restlessness, a sense of agitation, and difficulty quieting the mind. The combination of bupleurum, dragon bone, and oyster shell works to calm the nervous system without the sedative heaviness of pharmaceutical options. Insomnia and restless sleep: Many people find this formula helpful when sleep is disrupted by an overactive mind or a sense of inner tension. It helps calm the nervous system in the evening without morning grogginess, making it a popular choice for people who lie awake worrying or feeling wired at night. Heart palpitations: Heart palpitations linked to stress and anxiety — the feeling of a racing, fluttering, or pounding heart — are a traditional hallmark indication for this formula. Clinical use and some trial data support its ability to reduce palpitation frequency and intensity in people whose symptoms are stress-related rather than structural cardiac problems. High blood pressure (mild to moderate): SKRBT has shown promise in reducing mildly elevated blood pressure, particularly when hypertension is accompanied by stress, irritability, or insomnia. It is sometimes used alongside conventional antihypertensive treatment in Japanese clinical settings as a complementary approach. Stress and burnout: For people who feel physically depleted and emotionally on edge from chronic stress, this formula's adaptogen-like herbs (bupleurum, ginseng, poria) help restore a sense of calm resilience. It is widely used in Japan for workplace-related stress and exhaustion. Irritability and mood swings: When stress manifests as short temper, emotional reactivity, or a hair-trigger frustration response, SKRBT is a traditional go-to in Kampo practice. It helps smooth out the nervous system's response to emotional triggers rather than simply sedating. ADHD symptoms (children and adults): Several Japanese clinical studies have evaluated SKRBT for children with hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity — particularly those in whom conventional stimulant medications are problematic. Results have been encouraging, with improvements in behavioral measures noted in small controlled trials. Menopausal symptoms: Hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, and sleep disruption during menopause are classic indications for this formula in Kampo practice. It is sometimes combined with other Kampo formulas and has shown benefits for the anxiety and emotional volatility component of menopausal transition. Epilepsy (supportive use): SKRBT has been studied as an adjunct therapy for epilepsy in Japan — not as a replacement for anticonvulsant medications, but as a complementary treatment that may help reduce seizure frequency and improve quality of life. This use requires medical supervision.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
