Tight chest when stressed
You feel a tight band around your chest when stress hits. Some people say it feels like a weight on the breastbone. Others say they cannot pull in a full breath, no matter how hard they try.
Stress sets off the body's alarm system. Your breathing turns fast and shallow, and the muscles across your chest, back and shoulders pull tight. Sitting hunched at a desk or gripping the steering wheel can add to that pull.
The feeling often rises and falls along with the stressful part of your day. For some people it lingers for hours afterward. Noticing it can make you check your breathing more, which can make the tightness feel louder.
When to see someone
Call for emergency help if the tightness turns into heavy or crushing pain. Do the same if it spreads to your arm, jaw, neck or back, or comes with cold sweat, sickness or feeling faint. See a doctor soon if it starts when you walk uphill, wakes you at night, comes with a cough or wheeze, or shows up when you feel calm.
Below is a list of traditional remedies that people have used for anxiety. Each one carries an evidence grade that shows how much research exists and how strong it is. A low grade means the proof is thin, so speak with your doctor before you try something new.
