Bloated the week before my period
In the week before your period, your belly can feel puffy and tight. Your jeans may dig in, your rings may feel snug, and the scale may read a pound or two higher.
A lot of this is water. Hormones shift in the second half of your cycle, and your body holds on to more fluid and salt.
Some of the puffy feeling is gas and a slower gut. Food moves through more slowly, so you may feel full, windy, or go to the toilet less. Salt, alcohol, and short nights of sleep can add to it.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your belly stays swollen after your period ends, or if it is bloated most days for three weeks or more. Get checked soon for belly or pelvic pain that wakes you at night, blood in your stool, throwing up, a fever, or weight loss you did not plan. Also call if you feel full after only a few bites, or if bloating is new for you and you are past menopause.
Below is a list of home and natural options that people use for this part of the cycle. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has looked at it, not how well it will do for you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start anything new, above all if you take other medicine.
