What is Kamishoyosan? Kamishoyosan is a 10-herb Kampo formula that evolved from the classical Chinese formula Xiaoyaosan, with the addition of gardenia and moutan to address heat and emotional restlessness. It has been a cornerstone of Japanese integrative gynecology for over 400 years and is today one of the most commonly prescribed Kampo formulas in Japanese hospital and clinic settings. Unlike single-herb supplements, it works as a synergistic blend where each botanical contributes a specific role to the overall effect. How does Kamishoyosan work? The formula targets the interplay between emotional stress, liver function, and hormonal balance — concepts central to East Asian medicine that modern research is beginning to map onto Western physiology. Key herbs like bupleurum and peony appear to help calm the nervous system and regulate estrogen-related signaling, while gardenia and moutan address inflammation and heat symptoms like flushing. Poria and atractylodes support digestive and adrenal function, helping the body recover its equilibrium during hormonally turbulent periods. What forms does Kamishoyosan come in? In Japan, Kamishoyosan is most commonly dispensed as a granule powder (TJ-24 by Tsumura) that dissolves in warm water, as it is officially approved and reimbursed under Japan's national health insurance system. Tablets and capsules are available internationally. Traditional decoction (simmering the raw herbs) is still used by some practitioners for custom dosing. Granules and decoctions are considered most bioavailable by Kampo practitioners. Where it comes from: Kamishoyosan traces its roots to the Song Dynasty Chinese classic 'Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang' (1107 CE) and was later refined and adopted into Japanese Kampo practice during the Edo period. It became especially popular as a formula for what Kampo texts described as 'liver qi stagnation with heat' — a pattern that maps closely onto what modern women would recognize as hormonally driven emotional stress, PMS, and perimenopausal symptoms. Today it remains one of the top 5 most frequently prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan.

Helps

What does Kamishoyosan help with? PMS and premenstrual mood symptoms: Kamishoyosan is one of the most studied Kampo formulas for PMS, particularly for the emotional symptoms — irritability, tearfulness, and tension — that peak in the week before a period. It appears to help by calming overactivation of the stress response and gently modulating the hormonal fluctuations that trigger these mood shifts. Menopause symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats): Multiple Japanese clinical trials have examined Kamishoyosan for climacteric (menopausal) complaints, with notable improvements in hot flashes, night sweats, and overall quality of life. The gardenia and moutan components are thought to be especially relevant for cooling the heat-related symptoms of menopause. Irritability and emotional tension: Irritability, especially when it feels physically uncomfortable or hard to control, is the signature indication for this formula in Kampo practice. Several studies and decades of clinical use point to meaningful reductions in irritability scores within a few weeks of consistent use. Anxiety and stress: Kamishoyosan is frequently used for anxiety that shows up in the body as tight chest, sighing, or tension headaches alongside emotional restlessness. The bupleurum-peony combination is thought to help regulate how the body responds to stress signals. Sleep disturbances related to hormonal changes: Women going through perimenopause or dealing with severe PMS often experience poor sleep tied to night sweats or a racing, restless mind. Kamishoyosan's calming and heat-reducing effects may help restore more normal sleep in these contexts. Mild depression tied to hormonal shifts: In Kampo practice, Kamishoyosan is prescribed when low mood appears to be linked to hormonal cycling rather than being a standalone mood disorder. Clinical observations and a handful of trials suggest it can lift mood as part of broader hormonal rebalancing, particularly in perimenopausal women. Headaches linked to menstrual cycle: Premenstrual and menstrual headaches, especially those accompanied by irritability or neck and shoulder tension, are a recognized indication. The blood-moving herbs in the formula — particularly angelica and peony — are thought to help ease the vascular and muscle tension component of these headaches. Autonomic nervous system imbalance (palpitations, dizziness): In Japanese integrative medicine, Kamishoyosan is commonly used for the cluster of vague physical complaints tied to autonomic dysregulation — palpitations, dizziness, and flushing — that are common in perimenopause and stress-heavy periods of life. Climacteric disorder: Climacteric disorder is the broader Japanese clinical category covering the constellation of physical and emotional symptoms around menopause. Kamishoyosan is one of the top prescribed Kampo formulas for this condition and is supported by multiple Japanese clinical studies. Irregular periods: Traditional Kampo use includes addressing irregular cycle length and difficult periods when these are tied to emotional stress and tension. The formula's effect on stress hormones and blood flow regulation may help normalize menstrual timing over several months of use.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
