The app remembers what you have started, including Evening Primrose Oil, reminds you when to take it, and records whether it helped — so the next decision is based on your own notes rather than memory.
Evening primrose oil (EPO) is extracted from the seeds of Oenothera biennis, a wildflower native to North America. It is one of the richest plant-based sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a conditionally essential omega-6 fatty acid that most people cannot synthesize efficiently from dietary linoleic acid alone. The oil has been used medicinally since the 1970s, initially for eczema and inflammatory conditions, and its clinical applications have expanded to include women's hormonal health.
GLA from EPO is converted in the body to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), which serves as the precursor to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) — an eicosanoid with anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and platelet-inhibitory properties. Increased PGE1 activity may reduce the hormone-driven inflammation underlying PMS symptoms, breast tenderness, and skin barrier dysfunction. In women with mastalgia and PMS, research suggests that deficient GLA-to-DGLA conversion — possibly due to reduced delta-6-desaturase enzyme activity — contributes to symptoms, and supplemental GLA bypasses this enzymatic bottleneck.
Oral softgel capsules are the most clinically studied delivery form. Liquid oil is available for those who prefer to add it to food, though it is prone to oxidation and must be stored refrigerated and away from light. Topical formulations are used for skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin, but the evidence base for topical EPO is weaker than for oral supplementation. Some products combine EPO with borage oil (a higher-GLA source) to reduce the number of capsules needed.
Native Americans used the whole Oenothera biennis plant for various purposes, including poultices for bruising and skin disorders. Modern interest in the oil's therapeutic properties began in the 1970s when British researchers identified its GLA content and began investigating it for atopic eczema. The first commercial pharmaceutical-grade EPO product (Efamol) was introduced in the UK in the 1980s, where it held licensed drug status for mastalgia for a period before being reclassified as a supplement.
Some reactions to Evening Primrose Oil need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.
Call 911 if you have a seizure. Get help right away for bleeding that will not stop. Black or tarry stools, or blood in your vomit, also need care the same day.
Call your doctor within a day or two for easy bruising or nose bleeds. Do the same for bad headaches that keep coming back. Nausea, bloating or loose stools that last more than a week also need a call.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
