What is 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)? 5-HTP is an amino acid your body produces naturally from tryptophan, the same compound found in turkey and other protein-rich foods. It sits one step away from serotonin in the body's production chain, making it a highly direct way to support serotonin levels in the brain. Most 5-HTP supplements are extracted from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a climbing shrub native to West and Central Africa. How does 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) work? When you take 5-HTP, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and converts into serotonin with the help of vitamin B6. More serotonin generally means better mood, calmer anxiety, deeper sleep, and reduced food cravings. Some of that serotonin also gets converted into melatonin, which helps explain its sleep-promoting effects. What forms does 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) come in? Capsules and tablets are the most common forms, typically standardized to 50 mg or 100 mg per serving. Powders and chewables exist but are less common. Extended-release formulations are being explored to reduce peripheral serotonin buildup and GI side effects, though standard immediate-release remains most studied. Where it comes from: Griffonia simplicifolia seeds have been used in West African traditional medicine for various purposes, but 5-HTP as a focused therapeutic compound emerged from mid-20th century biochemistry research. It gained clinical interest in the 1980s–1990s as researchers studied it as a natural alternative to antidepressants, building a meaningful body of controlled trial data before becoming widely available as a supplement.

Helps

What does 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) help with? Low mood and mild depression: 5-HTP raises serotonin levels in the brain, which plays a central role in regulating mood. Several controlled trials have found it comparable to some antidepressant medications in reducing mild-to-moderate depression symptoms, with effects typically noticeable after 2–4 weeks of daily use. Anxiety and stress: Higher serotonin activity helps quiet the brain's stress-response circuits, and some studies show 5-HTP reduces anxiety symptoms — particularly social anxiety and generalized worry. It tends to work best as part of a broader calming routine rather than as a standalone anxiolytic. Sleep and insomnia: 5-HTP converts downstream into melatonin, the hormone that signals your body it's time to sleep. Clinical studies show it can reduce the time it takes to fall asleep and improve overall sleep quality, especially in people whose poor sleep is linked to low serotonin or mood imbalances. Appetite control and weight loss: Serotonin plays a direct role in satiety signaling — it tells your brain you've had enough. Clinical trials have found that 5-HTP supplementation significantly reduces calorie intake and supports modest weight loss, with the strongest effects seen on carbohydrate cravings. Fibromyalgia and chronic pain: Low serotonin is consistently observed in fibromyalgia patients, and 5-HTP appears to help by improving pain thresholds and sleep quality simultaneously. Some controlled trials have shown meaningful reductions in pain intensity, morning stiffness, and fatigue with regular use. Migraines and headache prevention: Serotonin fluctuations are a known trigger for migraines, and 5-HTP has been studied as a preventive agent. Several European trials found it reduced migraine frequency and intensity over time, though it works best as prevention rather than acute relief. Panic disorder: Some research suggests 5-HTP may reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks by stabilizing serotonin activity in the circuits responsible for fear responses. Results are preliminary but promising, particularly for people whose panic episodes are tied to mood dysregulation. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): The emotional symptoms of PMS — irritability, low mood, food cravings — are closely linked to serotonin dips in the luteal phase. 5-HTP may help smooth out these hormonal mood shifts by supporting baseline serotonin availability throughout the month. ADHD-related mood symptoms: While dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter targeted in ADHD treatment, serotonin plays a supporting role in emotional regulation and impulsivity. Some practitioners use 5-HTP alongside other approaches to address the mood and sleep disruptions that commonly accompany ADHD. Binge eating: By boosting serotonin's satiety signals, 5-HTP has shown measurable reductions in binge-eating episodes in small clinical studies. It appears to reduce the emotional and craving-driven components of overeating, particularly for carbohydrate-rich foods.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
