What is Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a specially pressurized chamber, typically at 1.5 to 3.0 times normal atmospheric pressure. This dramatically increases the amount of oxygen dissolved directly into your bloodstream, plasma, and tissues — far beyond what ordinary breathing achieves. Originally developed to treat deep-sea divers with decompression sickness, it has since expanded into a wide range of medical and wellness applications. How does Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) work? Under high pressure, oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma itself, not just the red blood cells, so it can reach areas with poor circulation or damaged blood vessels that normal oxygen delivery cannot penetrate. This flood of oxygen stimulates the body's natural repair processes: it triggers new blood vessel growth, reduces swelling and inflammation, activates stem cells, and directly kills certain anaerobic bacteria that cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments. Over a course of sessions, these effects stack to produce meaningful tissue repair and neurological recovery. What forms does Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) come in? Hospital-grade hard-shell monoplace and multiplace chambers operate at the full therapeutic 2.0–3.0 ATA range used for FDA-cleared indications. Soft-shell 'mild HBOT' chambers used in wellness and sports recovery settings typically operate at 1.3–1.5 ATA — effective for recovery and performance applications, though at lower intensity than clinical-grade sessions. Session length is typically 60–90 minutes . Where it comes from: HBOT traces its roots to the 1660s when physician Henshaw built pressurized rooms for respiratory conditions. Modern hyperbaric medicine took shape in the 1930s–1940s with military diving research, and the U.S. Navy established decompression treatment protocols in the 1940s. The FDA has cleared HBOT for 14 specific medical conditions, and research into off-label uses — including traumatic brain injury, long COVID, and anti-aging — has grown substantially since the 2000s.

Helps

What does Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) help with? Chronic wounds and diabetic foot ulcers: Many chronic wounds fail to heal because the tissue simply isn't getting enough oxygen to run the repair process. HBOT floods those tissues with oxygen, kick-starts new blood vessel growth, and gives the immune cells the fuel they need to clear infection — together these effects significantly improve closure rates for wounds that haven't budged with standard care. Decompression sickness (the bends): When divers ascend too quickly, nitrogen bubbles form in the blood and tissues, causing severe pain and potentially life-threatening complications. HBOT is the gold-standard emergency treatment: the high pressure physically shrinks the bubbles while pure oxygen flushes nitrogen out of the body rapidly. Stroke and brain injury recovery: After a stroke or brain injury, some brain cells are damaged but not yet dead — they're sitting in a low-oxygen 'twilight zone.' HBOT can re-oxygenate those areas, reduce brain swelling, and trigger the release of stem cells and growth factors that support neurological repair. Clinical research has shown measurable improvements in cognitive function and quality of life with structured treatment courses. Carbon monoxide poisoning: Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin far more tightly than oxygen, starving the body's tissues. HBOT displaces CO from hemoglobin many times faster than breathing ordinary air, reducing the risk of long-term neurological damage and cutting recovery time significantly. Radiation tissue damage: Radiation therapy can leave behind poorly oxygenated, fragile tissue that struggles to heal or tolerate surgical procedures. HBOT is an FDA-cleared treatment for radiation injury, helping rebuild the blood vessel network in affected areas and restoring tissue health well enough for further dental or surgical work. Sports recovery and performance: Athletes use HBOT to help muscles recover faster after intense training by clearing lactic acid buildup and reducing post-exercise inflammation. Mild chambers (1.3–1.5 ATA) are common in elite sports settings and have shown benefits for reducing delayed onset muscle soreness and shortening return-to-play timelines. Long COVID and post-viral fatigue: Long COVID appears to involve lasting inflammation and micro-vascular damage in multiple organ systems. Early clinical trials using HBOT in long COVID patients have shown meaningful improvements in brain fog, fatigue, and cognitive function, likely by promoting tissue repair and reducing neuroinflammation. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion: TBI leaves areas of the brain with reduced blood flow and oxygen delivery for months or years after the initial injury. Multiple clinical studies — including military veteran trials — have shown that courses of HBOT can improve post-concussive symptoms, sleep, mood, and cognitive performance, even years after the original injury. Infections (severe, anaerobic): Certain dangerous bacterial infections, particularly gas gangrene and necrotizing fasciitis, are caused by bacteria that cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments. HBOT is used as an adjunct to surgery and antibiotics to directly inhibit bacterial growth and enhance the immune system's infection-fighting capacity. Fibromyalgia and chronic pain: Research suggests fibromyalgia may involve abnormal brain activity patterns and central sensitization. A well-designed Israeli clinical trial found that HBOT significantly reduced pain and improved quality of life in fibromyalgia patients, with brain imaging showing normalization of abnormal activity in pain-processing regions.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A medical therapy where you breathe pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, allowing your body to absorb far more oxygen than normal.
  • Main uses: Speeds healing of wounds, supports recovery from brain injuries and strokes, reduces inflammation, and helps fight certain infections.
  • Best for: Chronic non-healing wounds, Brain and stroke recovery, Decompression sickness
  • Active ingredients: 100% pure oxygen, Increased atmospheric pressure (1.5–3.0 ATA)
  • Forms: Monoplace hyperbaric chamber (single-person), Multiplace hyperbaric chamber (group), Mild hyperbaric chambers (soft-shell, 1.3–1.5 ATA), Hospital-grade hard-shell chambers
  • Time to effect: Acute benefits (wound oxygenation) within 1–3 sessions; cumulative effects for healing and neurological conditions typically over 20–40 sessions
  • Side effects: Generally safe under medical supervision; mild ear pressure and temporary vision changes are the most common side effects, with rare but serious risk of oxygen toxicity at high pressures.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
