What is Ozone Therapy? Ozone therapy uses a carefully controlled mixture of medical-grade ozone and oxygen, administered through several routes depending on the condition being treated. It has been used clinically in Europe — particularly Germany, Italy, Spain, and Cuba — for over a century, with substantial practitioner experience and a growing body of human clinical research. It is most recognized for its ability to stimulate the body's own antioxidant defenses, improve oxygen delivery to tissues, and exert antimicrobial effects against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. How does Ozone Therapy work? When ozone contacts blood or body fluids, it reacts with fats and proteins to create messenger molecules that trigger a controlled, beneficial stress response — essentially training your cells to protect themselves and work more efficiently. This boosts your red blood cells' ability to carry oxygen, activates your natural antioxidant enzymes, modulates the immune system, and — at higher concentrations — directly destroys pathogens. Think of it as a calibrated biological stimulus that prompts the body to upregulate its own repair and defense systems. What forms does Ozone Therapy come in? Major autohemotherapy (MAH) is the most studied route — blood is drawn, mixed with ozone, and re-infused. Rectal insufflation is a well-tolerated, highly effective systemic route widely used in clinical practice and studied in peer-reviewed trials. Ozonated oils (olive, sunflower) provide a stable topical delivery vehicle with strong antimicrobial evidence. Prolozone therapy (direct joint injection of ozone/oxygen) is used for musculoskeletal pain. Each route has specific indications, and route selection matters clinically. Where it comes from: Ozone was discovered in the 1840s and first used medically during World War I to treat infected wounds. Systematic medical use developed in Germany in the mid-20th century, with Hansler's invention of the first medical ozone generator in 1957 enabling reliable clinical application. Cuba developed one of the world's largest ozone therapy programs in the 1980s–90s, producing significant peer-reviewed research. Today, ozone therapy is officially integrated into medical practice in Germany, Italy, Spain, Cuba, Russia, and several other countries, while remaining a licensed complementary therapy in many others.

Helps

What does Ozone Therapy help with? Chronic wounds and diabetic foot ulcers: Ozone therapy is probably best-supported here — it kills wound bacteria, stimulates new blood vessel growth, and dramatically improves oxygen supply to tissue that is starved of it. Multiple controlled trials have shown faster wound closure and reduced amputation risk in diabetic patients when ozone is added to standard wound care. Joint pain and osteoarthritis: Injecting a precise ozone-oxygen mixture directly into an arthritic joint (prolozone or intra-articular ozone) reduces inflammation and appears to stimulate cartilage-supporting growth factors. Several randomized trials, particularly in knee osteoarthritis, show meaningful pain reduction and improved mobility comparable to or exceeding steroid injections in some studies. Recurrent infections (bacterial, viral, fungal): Ozone directly destroys the cell walls of bacteria, disrupts viral envelopes, and kills fungi — it does not discriminate. Systemically (via MAH or rectal insufflation), it also modulates the immune response, helping the body mount a more effective defense. It has been studied in HIV, hepatitis B and C, herpes, and recurrent UTIs. Circulation problems and peripheral vascular disease: Ozone improves blood flow by making red blood cells more flexible and better at releasing oxygen to tissues. It also stimulates nitric oxide pathways that widen blood vessels. Clinical trials in peripheral arterial disease show improved walking distance and reduced limb pain with ozone treatment. Immune system support: Regular low-dose ozone therapy appears to train the immune system by triggering a mild, controlled oxidative signal that activates antioxidant defenses and shifts immune cell balance. This 'preconditioning' effect is well-documented in lab research and supported by clinical observations in immune-compromised patients. Dental infections and gum disease: Ozonated water and ozone gas are highly effective at killing periodontal bacteria without harming surrounding tissue. Randomized trials in dentistry show ozone reduces bacteria in infected root canals and pockets, reduces bleeding gums, and supports healing after procedures — with no antibiotic resistance risk. Chronic fatigue and low energy: Many practitioners use ozone therapy for fatigue, particularly linked to mitochondrial dysfunction or chronic viral triggers. By improving cellular oxygen utilization and stimulating the electron transport chain, some patients report meaningful energy improvements. Evidence here is more observational than trial-based, but mechanistically plausible. Herniated disc and back pain: Injecting ozone-oxygen into or near a herniated disc has been used in Europe and Latin America for over two decades. The ozone appears to oxidize and shrink the disc material while reducing local inflammation. Several controlled trials and large case series report substantial pain relief and reduced need for surgery. Inflammatory conditions: Ozone paradoxically reduces chronic inflammation despite being an oxidant — by triggering the body's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory response systems, it lowers the ongoing inflammatory burden in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic sinusitis. Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, infected wounds): Topical ozonated oils deliver stable ozone to the skin surface, killing pathogens and reducing inflammation without systemic exposure. Clinical evidence and extensive practitioner experience support use in infected eczema, psoriasis flares, and post-surgical wound care.

Ozone Therapy

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A medical treatment that uses a precise mixture of oxygen and ozone gas to stimulate healing, fight infection, and improve cellular energy production.
  • Main uses: Used for chronic wounds, infections, joint pain, immune support, and improving circulation — often as a complementary therapy alongside conventional care.
  • Best for: Chronic wounds and diabetic ulcers, Joint pain and osteoarthritis, Recurrent infections and immune support
  • Active ingredients: Ozone (O3), Oxygen-ozone gas mixture (typically 0.5–5% ozone / 95–99.5% oxygen), Ozone-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS), Lipid ozonation products (LOPs)
  • Forms: Major autohemotherapy (blood ozonation, IV), Minor autohemotherapy (intramuscular injection), Rectal insufflation, Vaginal insufflation, Ear insufflation, Ozonated water (topical or ingested), Ozonated oil (topical), Dental/oral application, Ozone sauna (transdermal), Direct injection (joint, muscle — prolozone)
  • Time to effect: Some effects (energy, wound healing) within 1–4 sessions; chronic condition benefits typically after 6–20 sessions over several weeks
  • Side effects: Generally safe when administered by a trained practitioner; risks include mild flu-like symptoms after IV sessions, vein irritation, and — if inhaled directly — airway irritation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
