This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Gua Lou refers to the whole fruit — and by extension the seeds (Gua Lou Zi) and peel (Gua Lou Pi) — of Trichosanthes kirilowii, a climbing vine native to China and East Asia. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years, appearing in the Shennong Bencao Jing (the oldest Chinese materia medica). The root, known separately as Tian Hua Fen, contains the potent protein trichosanthin and is treated as a distinct herb with its own applications and risks.
Gua Lou works primarily by thinning and clearing thick, sticky phlegm from the lungs and chest — what TCM calls 'transforming heat-phlegm.' Its fatty acids and cucurbitacins help relax the smooth muscle of the airways and support lymphatic circulation in the breast tissue. The seed oil and fiber components have a gentle lubricating laxative effect on the large intestine, making it useful for dry, difficult-to-pass stools.
In classical TCM, the whole fruit is typically decocted (simmered into a tea) as part of multi-herb formulas like Gua Lou Xie Bai Bai Jiu Tang for chest pain and congestion. Granule extracts and capsules make dosing more convenient in modern practice. The seed (Gua Lou Zi) is commonly used alone for constipation and lung dryness. The peel (Gua Lou Pi) is preferred for chest and cardiovascular applications. Avoid isolating trichosanthin (root extract) for self-use — it requires clinical supervision.
Gua Lou has been a cornerstone of TCM respiratory and breast health formulas for millennia. It is featured in classical formulas referenced in the Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases, ~200 CE) and remains one of the most widely used herbs in modern TCM clinical practice in China for chest bi-syndrome (coronary-type chest pain and congestion). In the 1980s, purified trichosanthin (from the root) gained international attention as a potential HIV and cancer therapy, driving significant modern pharmacological research into this plant family.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
