What is Wahls Protocol? The Wahls Protocol is a nutrient-dense, whole-food dietary approach developed by Dr. Terry Wahls, a clinical professor of medicine who was diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis in 2000. After losing significant function despite standard treatment, she redesigned her diet based on the specific micronutrients her mitochondria and neurons needed, and regained the ability to walk, bike, and work full-time. The protocol exists in three levels of intensity — the foundational Wahls Diet, the stricter Wahls Paleo, and the ketogenic Wahls Paleo Plus — each progressively reducing grains and legumes while increasing fat and animal protein. How does Wahls Protocol work? The protocol is built around two core ideas: giving the body the raw materials it needs for mitochondrial energy production and myelin repair, and removing foods that trigger inflammation or gut permeability. Nine cups of vegetables and fruit per day — split across leafy greens, sulfur-rich veggies, and deeply colored produce — deliver concentrated B vitamins, antioxidants, and sulfur compounds that support nerve cell function and reduce oxidative stress. At the advanced levels, the ketogenic structure shifts the brain to fat as its primary fuel, which some research suggests is more efficient for damaged neurons. What forms does Wahls Protocol come in? The protocol has three levels: Level 1 (Wahls Diet) adds 9 cups of vegetables daily to a standard diet while removing gluten and dairy. Level 2 (Wahls Paleo) eliminates grains, legumes, eggs, and nightshades, increasing fat and protein. Level 3 (Wahls Paleo Plus) is a therapeutic ketogenic version with very low carbohydrates, high fat, and moderate protein. Most people start at Level 1 and progress as tolerated. There are no pills — this is entirely a food-based protocol. Where it comes from: Dr. Wahls published her personal recovery and the protocol's scientific rationale in her 2014 book 'The Wahls Protocol.' She subsequently launched clinical trials through the University of Iowa to formally test the diet in MS patients. Her story gained wide attention after her 2011 TEDx talk became one of the most-viewed health talks online, drawing both patient interest and academic scrutiny.

Helps

What does Wahls Protocol help with? Multiple sclerosis (fatigue and energy): MS fatigue is one of the most debilitating and hard-to-treat symptoms of the disease. The Wahls Protocol directly targets the mitochondrial energy crisis thought to underlie MS fatigue by supplying the specific nutrients neurons need to generate ATP — the body's energy currency. In clinical pilot trials, participants following the Wahls diet reported meaningful reductions in fatigue levels compared to standard care. Autoimmune fatigue: Chronic fatigue in autoimmune conditions is often driven by systemic inflammation and mitochondrial stress. The protocol's anti-inflammatory food framework — eliminating processed foods, gluten, and dairy while flooding the body with antioxidants — helps calm the immune overreaction that drains cellular energy reserves. Brain fog and cognitive decline: The brain relies heavily on a steady supply of B vitamins, omega-3s, and antioxidants that the standard Western diet often under-delivers. The Wahls Protocol prioritizes exactly these nutrients through whole food sources, and many participants in studies and surveys report improvements in mental clarity and concentration within weeks of starting. Chronic neurological symptoms: Myelin — the protective sheath around nerve fibers — requires specific fatty acids, B12, and sulfur compounds to maintain its integrity. By supplying these through food rather than supplementation, the Wahls Protocol aims to slow nerve degradation and support the repair processes the nervous system uses naturally. Inflammatory conditions: The protocol removes the most common dietary inflammation drivers — refined sugar, industrial seed oils, gluten, and processed foods — while adding foods rich in natural anti-inflammatory compounds like quercetin, sulforaphane, and EPA/DHA. This two-sided approach reduces the inflammatory load on the immune system broadly. Gut health and leaky gut: A damaged gut lining is increasingly linked to autoimmune flares, as partially digested proteins slip into the bloodstream and trigger immune reactions. The Wahls Protocol removes common gut irritants and feeds beneficial gut bacteria with a massive increase in plant fiber and diversity, supporting a healthier intestinal barrier. Mitochondrial dysfunction: Mitochondria are the energy factories inside every cell, and they depend on a long list of micronutrients to function well. The protocol was designed specifically around the nutrient needs of mitochondria — particularly CoQ10, B vitamins, carnitine, and sulfur compounds — making it one of the few dietary approaches directly targeting cellular energy production. Depression and mood in chronic illness: People living with MS and other chronic conditions have high rates of depression, partly driven by inflammation affecting brain chemistry. Pilot study participants following the Wahls diet reported improvements in mood and mental health scores alongside physical changes, though it is not yet clear how much is direct brain effect versus improved quality of life from feeling better physically. Metabolic health and blood sugar: The Wahls Paleo Plus level is essentially a therapeutic ketogenic diet, which has well-established evidence for improving insulin sensitivity and stabilizing blood sugar. Even the foundational level significantly reduces refined carbohydrates and processed food, which supports better metabolic markers across the board.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A structured therapeutic diet developed by Dr. Terry Wahls, a physician who used it to reverse her own secondary progressive MS symptoms, focused on flooding the body with micronutrients through whole foods.
  • Main uses: Managing multiple sclerosis symptoms, reducing fatigue, supporting nerve function, and improving energy and quality of life in autoimmune conditions.
  • Best for: Multiple sclerosis (fatigue and mobility), Autoimmune fatigue, Neurological support
  • Active ingredients: Sulfur-rich vegetables (kale, cabbage, onions), Deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables (beets, berries, carrots), Leafy greens (9 cups of vegetables and fruit per day total), Grass-fed meat and wild-caught fish, Omega-3 fatty acids, Coenzyme Q10 (via food), B vitamins (especially B1, B6, B9, B12), Antioxidants (quercetin, sulforaphane, resveratrol via food)
  • Forms: Dietary protocol (food-based), Three progressive levels: Wahls Diet, Wahls Paleo, Wahls Paleo Plus
  • Time to effect: Many people notice fatigue improvements within 3–12 weeks; broader neurological benefits may take 3–6 months or longer.
  • Side effects: Generally well tolerated; most side effects are short-term digestive adjustment, though the high vegetable volume and food restrictions can be demanding to sustain.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
