This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Autophagy — from the Greek for 'self-eating' — is the process your cells use to identify, break down, and recycle their own worn-out or damaged components. Think of it as a deep clean that happens at the microscopic level: old proteins, malfunctioning mitochondria, and cellular debris get tagged, packaged, and either reused or cleared out. This process naturally slows as we age, but fasting reliably switches it back on.
When you go without food for an extended period, your body senses the drop in nutrients and energy. This triggers two key shifts: AMPK (your cellular energy detector) activates, and mTOR (a growth-promoting protein that normally suppresses autophagy) gets turned down. Together, these signals tell your cells to stop building new things and start cleaning house — breaking down and recycling damaged internal components instead of letting them accumulate.
The most practical and well-studied approaches are time-restricted eating (16-18 hours fasting daily) and periodic extended fasts (24-72 hours). Intermittent fasting protocols like 16:8 are the most sustainable for most people. Extended fasts produce deeper autophagy activation but carry more risk and should be approached gradually. Certain compounds — like spermidine, resveratrol, and berberine — are studied for their ability to mimic or support some autophagy pathways without fasting.
Nearly every major spiritual and cultural tradition independently developed fasting practices — from Ramadan to Yom Kippur to Buddhist monastic fasting to Native American vision quests. These traditions consistently reported mental clarity, physical renewal, and spiritual insight, which we now understand to align with the biochemistry of autophagy. The modern science was crystallized when Yoshinori Ohsumi received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work mapping the genes and mechanisms that govern autophagy in yeast — findings that translated directly to human biology.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
