What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a sealed chamber pressurized to 1.5–3.0 times normal atmospheric pressure. This dramatically increases the amount of oxygen dissolved directly into your blood plasma, allowing it to reach tissues that normal red blood cell delivery cannot. It was first developed in the 1930s for deep-sea diving decompression sickness and has since grown into a recognized medical treatment for over a dozen FDA-cleared conditions. How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy work? Under elevated pressure, oxygen dissolves into blood plasma at levels 10–15 times higher than normal breathing, flooding oxygen-starved or damaged tissues. This hyperoxic environment stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, enhances white blood cell activity to fight infection, reduces dangerous swelling in brain and injured tissue, and triggers stem cell release from bone marrow. It also creates a hostile environment for certain anaerobic bacteria that cannot survive in high-oxygen conditions. What forms does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy come in? Hospital-grade hard-shell monoplace or multiplace chambers deliver the highest therapeutic pressures (2.0–3.0 ATA) and are used for serious medical conditions. Soft-shell mild hyperbaric chambers operate at 1.3 ATA and are available for home or wellness use, offering gentler benefits with a lower risk profile. For FDA-cleared indications, only hard-shell medical chambers are used clinically. Where it comes from: The first hyperbaric chamber for medical use was built in the 1660s by British physician Nathaniel Henshaw. Modern HBOT developed rapidly after the 1930s when it was used to treat decompression sickness in divers. By the 1960s, it was being explored for carbon monoxide poisoning and wound healing. Today the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) recognizes 14 FDA-cleared indications, and research into neurological, cognitive, and longevity applications is actively expanding.

Helps

What does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy help with? Non-healing wounds and diabetic foot ulcers: When wounds stall because of poor circulation or diabetes, tissues starve for oxygen and healing stops. HBOT floods those tissues with high-dose oxygen, kick-starts new blood vessel growth, and restores the body's ability to fight infection — giving stuck wounds the push they need to finally close. Carbon monoxide poisoning: Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin hundreds of times more tightly than oxygen, blocking your blood's ability to carry oxygen to the brain and heart. Breathing pure oxygen at high pressure rapidly displaces the carbon monoxide and restores normal oxygen delivery, dramatically cutting the risk of long-term brain damage. Decompression sickness (diving injuries): When divers surface too quickly, nitrogen bubbles form in the blood and tissues causing pain, paralysis, and organ damage. HBOT is the gold-standard emergency treatment — the pressure physically shrinks the bubbles while high oxygen flushes nitrogen out of the body. Brain fog and cognitive decline: HBOT appears to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to areas of the brain that have become sluggish due to aging, injury, or chronic illness. Research shows improvements in memory, attention, and processing speed, and brain scans show measurable increases in activity in previously underactive regions. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion: After a brain injury, damaged but still-living tissue can remain in a low-oxygen, dormant state for months or years. HBOT can reawaken this tissue by restoring oxygen supply, reducing inflammation, and promoting new blood vessel growth in injured brain areas. Post-COVID fatigue and long COVID: Long COVID appears to involve persistent micro-damage to blood vessels and oxygen delivery across multiple organs. Early clinical trials show that HBOT can reduce fatigue, improve brain fog, and restore physical function in long COVID patients, likely by repairing vascular damage and reducing neuroinflammation. Radiation tissue damage (after cancer treatment): Radiation therapy can leave behind fragile, oxygen-deprived tissue that breaks down slowly over months or years. HBOT stimulates the regrowth of blood vessels in irradiated tissue and is an FDA-cleared treatment for osteoradionecrosis (radiation damage to bone) and other radiation injuries. Bone infections (osteomyelitis): Deep bone infections are notoriously hard to treat because antibiotics struggle to reach oxygen-poor bone tissue and because the bacteria thrive in low-oxygen environments. HBOT boosts oxygen levels deep in bone, directly impairs the bacteria, and makes antibiotics significantly more effective. Stroke recovery: In the weeks to years after a stroke, some brain tissue around the damaged area remains alive but barely functioning. HBOT can help restore activity in this vulnerable tissue by improving oxygenation, reducing swelling, and supporting neuroplasticity, with some studies showing improved motor and cognitive function even in chronic stroke. PTSD and mental health support: Emerging research suggests HBOT may reduce PTSD symptoms by improving blood flow and metabolic activity in brain regions involved in emotional regulation and memory processing. Though still early stage, results from veteran populations have been encouraging.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A therapy where you breathe pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, delivering far more oxygen to your blood and tissues than normal breathing allows.
  • Main uses: Speeds healing of wounds, fights infections, supports recovery from brain injuries, and helps with conditions caused by poor oxygen delivery to tissues.
  • Best for: Non-healing wounds, Carbon monoxide poisoning, Brain and cognitive recovery
  • Active ingredients: 100% medical-grade oxygen, increased atmospheric pressure (1.5–3.0 ATA)
  • Forms: monoplace chamber (single-person), multiplace chamber (multi-person), mild hyperbaric chamber (soft-shell, 1.3 ATA), hospital-grade hard-shell chamber
  • Time to effect: Acute wound and infection benefits often appear within 5–10 sessions; neurological or chronic condition improvements may take 20–40 sessions.
  • Side effects: Generally well tolerated under medical supervision, but ear pressure discomfort is common and rare serious risks like oxygen toxicity exist at high pressures.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
