Home

What is Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that are molecularly identical to those your body makes naturally — primarily estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. Unlike older synthetic hormone drugs, bioidentical hormones are derived from plant sources (usually wild yam or soy) and processed to exactly match human hormones. They can be prescribed as FDA-approved products or custom-compounded by a pharmacy based on your individual lab results. How does Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy work? As we age — especially during perimenopause, menopause, or andropause — hormone levels fall, often causing symptoms like hot flashes, poor sleep, low libido, brain fog, and mood swings. BHRT replenishes these hormones to levels that feel more like your younger baseline, helping your brain, bones, heart, and metabolism function more smoothly. Because the molecules are identical to your own hormones, they interact with the body's hormone receptors in the same natural way your native hormones would. What forms does Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy come in? Delivery method matters because it affects how hormones are absorbed and metabolized. Transdermal patches, creams, and gels bypass the liver and are often considered the safest route for estrogen. Oral micronized progesterone (like Prometrium) is well-studied and widely used. Pellets are implanted under the skin and release hormones gradually over 3–6 months . Compounded formulas can be customized to your exact dose needs, though they carry less standardization than FDA-approved products. Where it comes from: Hormone therapy has been used since the 1940s, but early versions used synthetic or animal-derived hormones (like Premarin from horse urine and Provera, a synthetic progestin) that behaved differently from human hormones. The 2002 Women's Health Initiative study raised concerns about those older synthetic formulas. The modern BHRT movement grew from the recognition that bioidentical molecules — chemically identical to human hormones — may carry a different and more favorable risk profile, a position supported by a growing body of clinical research and endorsed by many integrative and conventional practitioners.

Helps

What does Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy help with? Menopause and perimenopause symptoms: BHRT is one of the most effective tools available for managing the hormonal turbulence of perimenopause and menopause. Restoring estradiol and progesterone to healthy levels reliably reduces the intensity and frequency of the classic symptom cluster — hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disruption, and fatigue — often within a few weeks of starting therapy. Hot flashes and night sweats: Hot flashes happen because dropping estrogen disrupts the brain's internal thermostat. Estradiol supplementation directly stabilizes this system, and studies consistently show it reduces hot flash frequency by 75–90% in most women. This is the single best-supported indication for BHRT. Low libido and sexual dysfunction: Estrogen keeps vaginal tissue healthy and sensitive, while testosterone drives desire and arousal in both men and women. BHRT addresses both layers — restoring moisture and comfort for women, and rebuilding libido and sexual satisfaction across genders. Sleep problems and insomnia: Progesterone has a calming, sleep-promoting effect through its action on GABA receptors in the brain — the same pathway that anti-anxiety medications target. Many people notice significantly deeper, more restful sleep within weeks of starting micronized progesterone. Mood changes, anxiety, and depression: Estrogen and progesterone both influence serotonin and other mood-regulating chemicals in the brain. Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause are a leading trigger for new-onset depression and anxiety in women, and restoring stable hormone levels often has a meaningful and rapid effect on emotional wellbeing. Brain fog and cognitive decline: Estrogen plays a real role in brain function — it supports memory, processing speed, and mental clarity. Many women experience noticeable mental sharpness improvements with BHRT, and early initiation (during perimenopause) is associated with better long-term cognitive outcomes. Low testosterone (men and women): Testosterone isn't just a male hormone — women need it too for energy, confidence, muscle tone, and sex drive. Bioidentical testosterone therapy (patches, pellets, or topical) is used in both men with andropause and women with clinically low levels, with evidence supporting improvements in energy, body composition, and quality of life. Bone loss and osteoporosis risk: Estrogen is one of the most important regulators of bone density. After menopause, bone loss accelerates rapidly as estrogen drops. BHRT, particularly estradiol, has well-established evidence for slowing bone loss and reducing fracture risk — this is actually an FDA-approved indication for estrogen therapy. Vaginal dryness and discomfort: Low estrogen causes vaginal tissues to thin and dry out, leading to discomfort during sex and increased urinary symptoms. Local (vaginal) estrogen cream or ring delivers estrogen directly to the tissue with minimal systemic absorption and is remarkably effective for this condition. Fatigue and low energy: Many people going through hormonal transitions feel persistently exhausted in ways that sleep alone doesn't fix. Restoring testosterone, thyroid support, and adrenal hormones like DHEA through a personalized BHRT protocol can meaningfully rebuild stamina and daily energy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
