This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Vitamin B3 is an essential nutrient your body cannot make in meaningful amounts on its own, so you need to get it from food or supplements. It exists in several forms — nicotinic acid, niacinamide, and nicotinamide riboside — each with slightly different uses and effects in the body. At its core, niacin is converted into NAD+, a molecule involved in virtually every energy-producing process in your cells.
Niacin gets converted into NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which acts like a master fuel switch inside your cells — it helps turn food into usable energy and keeps your metabolism running. NAD+ also plays a direct role in repairing damaged DNA and regulating inflammation. In its nicotinic acid form at high doses, niacin also directly changes how your liver handles fats, pushing up good cholesterol and pulling down triglycerides.
Immediate-release niacin is the most studied form for cholesterol but causes the most flushing. Extended-release formulas reduce flushing but carry a slightly higher risk of liver stress at high doses. Niacinamide is the preferred form for skin, anxiety, and joint applications. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is the go-to for NAD+ optimization and anti-aging support. Topical niacinamide is widely used in skincare for pore reduction, brightening, and barrier repair.
Niacin's story is rooted in one of history's most dramatic nutritional discoveries. In the early 1900s, pellagra — a devastating disease causing dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death — swept through communities in the American South and parts of Europe whose diets depended heavily on corn. By the 1930s, biochemist Conrad Elvehjem identified nicotinic acid as the cure. Niacin was then added to flour and grains in the US, effectively eliminating pellagra within a decade. Decades later, in the 1950s and 60s, researcher Abram Hoffer pioneered high-dose niacin therapy for cholesterol and psychiatric conditions, opening a new chapter in nutritional medicine.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
