What is Nicotinamide (Non-Flush B3)? Nicotinamide (also called niacinamide) is one of the two main forms of vitamin B3, the other being niacin (nicotinic acid). Unlike niacin, nicotinamide does not cause the intense skin flushing and tingling that many people find intolerable, making it a more practical choice for daily supplementation. It is found naturally in food and is also produced in the body from dietary tryptophan. How does Nicotinamide (Non-Flush B3) work? Nicotinamide is a direct building block for NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a molecule that powers energy production in virtually every cell in the body and plays a key role in DNA repair. It also calms overactive inflammatory signals in the skin and joints, and helps insulin work more effectively in cells that manage blood sugar. Topically, it strengthens the skin's protective barrier, reduces pigmentation, and visibly shrinks pores over time. What forms does Nicotinamide (Non-Flush B3) come in? Oral forms include capsules, tablets, and powder — all similarly absorbed. For skin conditions, topical niacinamide serums (typically 2–10% concentration) are widely used and have strong cosmetic and clinical evidence. Some practitioners use high-dose oral forms specifically for osteoarthritis or blood sugar support under supervision. Where it comes from: B3 deficiency (pellagra) was a major public health crisis in the early 20th century, particularly in the American South and parts of Europe where corn-based diets were common. The discovery that niacin and niacinamide cured pellagra in the 1930s was a landmark moment in nutritional medicine. Since then, nicotinamide's unique non-flush profile has made it the preferred B3 form for therapeutic and cosmetic use.

Helps

What does Nicotinamide (Non-Flush B3) help with? Acne and oily skin: Nicotinamide calms the inflammatory signals that turn a clogged pore into a red, painful breakout. Topical 4% niacinamide serums have been shown to reduce acne lesion counts and control excess oil production, and are well-tolerated by sensitive skin types. Skin pigmentation and dark spots: Niacinamide blocks the transfer of pigment-producing melanosomes from deeper skin cells to the surface, gradually fading dark spots, sun damage, and uneven tone. Results typically become visible after 4–8 weeks of consistent topical use. Osteoarthritis joint pain: Oral nicotinamide has been studied for its ability to reduce joint stiffness and improve mobility in people with osteoarthritis. It appears to support cartilage health by reducing inflammatory signaling within joint tissue and boosting cellular energy in cartilage cells. Blood sugar and prediabetes: Nicotinamide may improve the sensitivity of cells to insulin, helping the body manage blood sugar more effectively. This effect is most relevant for people in early stages of blood sugar imbalance and is being studied as a complement to lifestyle changes. Skin aging and fine lines: By supporting collagen production and strengthening the skin's outer barrier, topical niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and gives skin a firmer, more even look over time. It pairs well with other anti-aging actives like retinol and vitamin C. Eczema and sensitive skin: Nicotinamide helps rebuild the skin barrier by boosting production of ceramides and other protective lipids, which are often depleted in eczema-prone skin. This reduces water loss and calms redness and irritation over time. Fatigue and low energy: As a direct precursor to NAD+, nicotinamide helps cells produce energy more efficiently. People with low B3 levels or high energy demands may notice improvements in stamina and mental clarity with regular supplementation. Type 1 diabetes prevention (children at risk): In children who show early immune markers indicating risk for type 1 diabetes, nicotinamide has been studied for its ability to protect the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas from immune attack. This remains an active area of research. Pellagra and B3 deficiency: Nicotinamide is the standard treatment for pellagra, the deficiency disease caused by chronically low B3 intake. Symptoms like dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia resolve reliably with supplementation, and it is preferred over niacin because it causes no flushing. Kidney disease skin itch: People with chronic kidney disease often experience persistent, difficult-to-treat itching. Oral nicotinamide has been studied as a way to reduce this itch by blocking a specific itch-signaling pathway in the skin, offering relief without sedating antihistamines.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
