What is Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark TCM)? Rou Gui (Cinnamomum cassia bark) is one of Traditional Chinese Medicine's foundational warming herbs, used for millennia to 'warm the Kidney yang, dispel cold, and move blood.' It is distinct from Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) in its higher cinnamaldehyde and coumarin content, giving it a stronger, spicier profile and more potent medicinal action. Modern research has validated many of its traditional applications, particularly around blood sugar regulation and metabolic health. How does Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark TCM) work? Rou Gui's main active compound, cinnamaldehyde, mimics insulin by activating glucose transporters (GLUT4) and improving insulin receptor sensitivity, which helps cells absorb blood sugar more efficiently. Its polyphenols and procyanidins act as antioxidants that reduce low-grade inflammation — a key driver of metabolic and cardiovascular problems. The bark also promotes peripheral blood flow by relaxing smooth muscle in blood vessels, which explains its traditional use for cold hands, feet, and sluggish circulation. What forms does Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark TCM) come in? TCM traditionally uses Rou Gui as a decoction (simmered bark pieces) or as ground powder stirred into warm water or food. Modern supplements come as standardized capsules (often standardized to 1–3% cinnamaldehyde), water- or alcohol-based extracts, and combination formulas. For blood sugar support, standardized extracts or powders are most studied. The essential oil is used topically for circulation and muscle discomfort but should not be taken internally. Where it comes from: Rou Gui has been a cornerstone of Chinese Medicine since at least the Han Dynasty (~200 BCE), featured in the foundational text Shennong Bencao Jing as a top-grade herb. It was used to warm the interior, tonify yang, dispel cold-dampness, and relieve pain from cold obstruction. Historically it was also a luxury spice traded across Asia, the Middle East, and eventually Europe — one of the most coveted spices in the ancient world. Its inclusion in classical formulas like You Gui Wan (Right-Restoring Pill) reflects its enduring status as a kidney-yang tonic.

Helps

What does Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark TCM) help with? High blood sugar and insulin resistance: Rou Gui helps your cells respond to insulin more effectively, so blood sugar doesn't stay elevated after meals. Multiple human trials show it can meaningfully lower fasting blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity, especially in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes support: As a complementary support alongside diet and medication, cinnamon bark has been shown to reduce fasting blood glucose, and in some studies also lower HbA1c — the long-term blood sugar marker. It's not a replacement for prescribed treatment but a well-researched adjunct. Cold hands and feet / poor circulation: In TCM, Rou Gui is a premier herb for 'warming the channels' — improving blood flow to the extremities. Cinnamaldehyde relaxes blood vessel walls, promoting circulation to hands, feet, and the lower body, which is why it's traditionally used for people who always feel cold. Digestive bloating and cramping: Rou Gui gently warms and stimulates the digestive tract, relieving bloating, sluggish digestion, nausea, and cramping that tend to worsen in cold weather or with cold foods. It has mild carminative (gas-relieving) effects and helps move stagnant gut activity. High cholesterol and triglycerides: Some clinical studies show that regular cinnamon supplementation can modestly lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while slightly raising HDL. The effect is most consistent in people who also have elevated blood sugar. Joint pain in cold conditions: Rou Gui is traditionally used for bi syndrome — joint pain that worsens with cold and damp. Its warming and anti-inflammatory properties help ease stiffness and aching in joints that flare in cold weather, particularly in the lower back and knees. Low energy and fatigue (yang deficiency): In TCM, Rou Gui is a core herb for kidney yang deficiency — a pattern characterized by low energy, cold sensitivity, lower back weakness, and low libido. It is thought to rekindle the body's foundational warmth and vitality. Menstrual pain and irregularity: Rou Gui has been used for centuries to ease painful, irregular, or delayed periods associated with cold and blood stagnation. Small clinical studies support its use for reducing menstrual pain intensity and improving cycle regularity in dysmenorrhea. Metabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome involves a cluster of issues — high blood sugar, high triglycerides, excess waist fat, and blood pressure problems. Cinnamon addresses several of these simultaneously, making it a useful adjunct for people managing this combination. Antimicrobial / gut bacteria balance: Cinnamaldehyde has demonstrated antimicrobial action against common pathogens and may help maintain a healthier gut microbiome balance. This is thought to contribute to its traditionally recognized benefit for digestive infections and gut dysbiosis.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
