What is Beta-glucan? Beta-glucan is a type of soluble fiber that is found in the cell walls of various grains, fungi, and yeast. It is a complex carbohydrate that has been studied for its potential health benefits. How does it work? Beta-glucan works by stimulating the immune system to produce white blood cells that help fight against foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria. It also has the ability to regulate the activity of certain immune cells and cytokines, making it a promising supplement for boosting immunity and preventing chronic diseases. What is the active ingredient or ingredients that makes it work? The active ingredient in Beta-glucan is the Beta-glucan molecule, which is a polysaccharide composed of glucose units. What forms does it come in? Beta-glucan can be found in supplement form as a powder or capsule. It can also be found in certain foods such as barley, oats, and mushrooms. When was it first used for medicinal purposes? Beta-glucan was first used for medicinal purposes in Japan in the 1970s and has since gained popularity as a natural supplement for boosting immunity and preventing chronic diseases. What if I have an imbalance or deficiency? A deficiency or imbalance in Beta-glucan can result in a weakened immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight off infections and prevent chronic diseases.

Helps

What does Beta-glucan help with? Beta-glucan is a soluble fiber. It is found in oats, barley, baker's yeast and some mushrooms. People eat it in food or take it as a supplement. High LDL cholesterol Strong evidence — multiple clinical trials using 3 grams a day. In multiple clinical trials, 3 grams a day of oat or barley beta-glucan lowered LDL cholesterol. The change showed up with steady daily intake, not with one-off doses. In the gut it forms a gel that binds bile acids and food cholesterol, and this is the accepted reading of those trial results. Evidence grade A · Traditional tier T0 Catching colds and chest infections often Good evidence — clinical trials of standard yeast beta-glucan in healthy adults and children. Clinical trials using standard yeast beta-glucan reported fewer upper airway infections in healthy adults and children. Symptoms were milder in those trials too. In lab work, yeast and mushroom beta-glucans switched on immune cells: macrophages, neutrophils and natural killer cells. Our file does not list the trial sizes or doses. Evidence grade B · Traditional tier T0 Blood sugar spikes after meals Early evidence — human studies of post-meal blood sugar; sizes and doses not on file. Studies found that oat beta-glucan blunted the rise in blood sugar after a meal. In those studies the thick gel slowed how fast carbs were broken down and taken up. Whether this leads to better insulin sensitivity over months is less clear in our file. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T0 Feeling full and managing weight Early evidence — short-term feeding studies; no long-term weight trials on file. In feeding studies, people who ate beta-glucan-rich foods or supplements said they felt full for longer. They also ate less overall. The studies point to slower stomach emptying and to gut hormones that signal fullness. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T0 High blood pressure Early evidence — several trials with small, modest results. Several trials reported small drops in blood pressure. The drops were modest, not large. Researchers link them to body weight, blood vessel health and gut bacteria, but that link is not settled. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T0 Gut bacteria out of balance Early evidence — prebiotic studies; trial sizes not on file. Beta-glucan acts as a prebiotic, which means gut bacteria feed on it. Studies found it fed helpful bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. It is one of the better-studied fibers for this. Evidence grade C · Traditional tier T0 Hay fever and seasonal allergies Evidence doesn't support this — a small amount of early human research. Some early research looked at yeast beta-glucan in people with seasonal allergies. A few reports found milder symptoms. The work is too thin to say what it does. Evidence grade D · Traditional tier T0 Support during cancer treatment Evidence doesn't support this — clinical use in several Asian countries plus early research. In several Asian countries, oral and injected beta-glucan has been used alongside standard cancer care. Early research asks whether immune cells stay more active during chemotherapy and radiation. This is specialist ground and needs a cancer team's guidance. Evidence grade D · Traditional tier T0 Metabolic syndrome Not yet tested in people — no trial of the whole cluster on file; only separate studies of single risk factors. Metabolic syndrome means several risks at once: blood sugar, blood fats, blood pressure and waist size. Beta-glucan has been studied against some of these one at a time. Our file holds no trial that tested it against the cluster as a whole. Evidence grade insufficient · Traditional tier T0 What Beta-glucan has not been shown to do No trial on file tested beta-glucan against metabolic syndrome as a whole; that idea comes from adding up separate results. It has not been shown to treat cancer itself; the research is about immune cells during treatment. The fullness studies are not weight-loss trials, and no

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
