What is Enzymatically modified rice bran? Enzymatically modified rice bran (EMRB) is rice bran — the nutrient-dense outer layer of the rice grain — that has been treated with enzymes derived from shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes). This enzymatic process breaks apart complex carbohydrate chains called hemicelluloses, unlocking arabinoxylan compounds that would otherwise pass through the body unused. The result is a highly bioavailable supplement with well-documented effects on immune function and metabolic health. How does Enzymatically modified rice bran work? The key active compounds — particularly arabinoxylan — act as biological response modifiers, meaning they interact with immune cells and signal them to become more active. Natural killer (NK) cells, which patrol the body and destroy abnormal or infected cells, show especially strong responses. EMRB also slows glucose absorption in the gut and helps regulate cholesterol metabolism through its fiber and phytosterol content. What forms does Enzymatically modified rice bran come in? Powder sachets (often 1 g per sachet) are the most studied form and can be mixed into water or juice. Capsules and tablets offer convenience for daily use. Powder dissolved in liquid is generally considered optimal for absorption. Quality varies significantly between brands — look for products standardized to arabinoxylan content and ideally tested by third parties. Where it comes from: Rice bran has been consumed across Asia for centuries as a food and folk remedy. The enzymatic modification process was developed in Japan in the 1990s by researchers seeking to make rice bran's active compounds bioavailable. The best-known commercial product, Biobran/MGN-3, has been studied in both Japan and the United States since the mid-1990s, particularly in oncology settings.

Helps

What does Enzymatically modified rice bran help with? Weakened immune system: EMRB is one of the most studied natural compounds for activating natural killer (NK) cells — the immune system's front-line defenders against viruses and abnormal cells. Studies show meaningful increases in NK cell activity within a few weeks of daily use, even in people with significantly suppressed immunity. Cancer treatment support: EMRB is used alongside conventional cancer treatments to help maintain immune function, which often takes a hit during chemotherapy or radiation. Some research shows it may also slow the growth of certain cancer cells, though it is used as a complement to — not a replacement for — standard care. High blood sugar and type 2 diabetes: The arabinoxylan fiber in EMRB slows how quickly sugar enters the bloodstream after a meal, helping to reduce blood sugar spikes. Clinical trials have shown improvements in fasting blood glucose and insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. High cholesterol: The phytosterols and soluble fiber in EMRB compete with dietary cholesterol for absorption in the gut, helping to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. Gamma-oryzanol may also reduce how much cholesterol the liver produces. Chronic fatigue: Small clinical studies suggest EMRB may reduce fatigue and improve energy levels, possibly through its effects on immune function and reducing chronic low-grade inflammation that can drain energy over time. Hepatitis B and C: EMRB's immune-boosting properties have been studied in patients with chronic hepatitis, with some trials reporting improved liver enzyme levels and better immune response to the virus. It is used as an add-on to medical treatment, not a standalone cure. HIV immune support: Early research found that EMRB could meaningfully raise NK cell and CD4 cell counts in people living with HIV, supporting the immune system's ability to fight infection. These findings are promising but based on small studies that need replication. Inflammation and oxidative stress: Ferulic acid, tocotrienols, and other antioxidants in EMRB help neutralize free radicals and calm chronic inflammation — two underlying drivers of many modern diseases, from heart disease to accelerated aging. Allergy and asthma: Some research suggests EMRB may help balance the immune response in people prone to allergies, reducing the overreaction that triggers symptoms. Studies are limited but results are encouraging. Digestive health: As a fiber-rich supplement, EMRB feeds beneficial gut bacteria and supports regular bowel movements. A healthier gut microbiome is linked to better immune function, reduced inflammation, and improved overall wellness.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
