Helps

What does Polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) help with? Fatty liver disease (NAFLD / NASH): PPC helps liver cells process and export fat more efficiently, reducing the buildup that drives fatty liver. It also calms the inflammation that can push simple fatty liver toward more serious scarring. Clinical use has shown reductions in liver enzyme levels and improvements in ultrasound appearance with sustained supplementation. Alcohol-related liver damage: Alcohol depletes the liver's natural phospholipid stores and damages cell membranes. PPC replenishes these directly, helping liver cells rebuild their protective lining and reduce ongoing injury. Long-term studies in alcohol-exposed primates and human trials have shown it can slow or reverse early fibrosis. High triglycerides and cholesterol: PPC activates an enzyme in the blood called LCAT that helps package and clear cholesterol, and it also promotes fat breakdown in the liver. This combination can modestly lower LDL and triglycerides while supporting HDL levels in people with metabolic or liver-related lipid issues. Liver fibrosis and scarring: PPC appears to slow the activation of cells that produce scar tissue in the liver (stellate cells) and reduces oxidative stress that drives fibrosis. This is one of its most studied properties, particularly in the context of alcohol-related liver disease. Hepatitis B and C (adjunct support): PPC has been used alongside antiviral therapy in Eastern European clinical practice to help reduce liver enzyme elevations and support cell membrane integrity during chronic hepatitis. It is not an antiviral itself but may reduce inflammation and support liver cell survival. Medication-induced liver stress: Certain medications — including statins, antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs — can stress the liver. PPC is sometimes used as a hepatoprotective adjunct to reduce this burden and keep liver enzymes in a healthier range during treatment. Poor fat digestion and absorption: As a phospholipid, PPC helps emulsify fats in the gut, improving how dietary fats are broken down and absorbed. This can be useful for people with bile insufficiency or fat malabsorption issues. Liver damage from toxin or chemical exposure: PPC has hepatoprotective properties that make it useful after exposure to environmental toxins, industrial chemicals, or heavy alcohol use — helping liver cells recover faster and limiting secondary scarring. Cognitive support and brain cell health: Phosphatidylcholine is a key structural fat in brain cell membranes and a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. PPC contributes to this pool, and some evidence suggests phospholipid supplementation may support memory and mental clarity, particularly in older adults.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A highly purified form of phosphatidylcholine — a natural fat-soluble molecule that forms the backbone of cell membranes — concentrated from soybean lecithin.
  • Main uses: Best known for supporting liver health, protecting liver cells from damage, and helping manage fatty liver disease and elevated blood fats.
  • Best for: Fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), Liver damage from alcohol, High cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Active ingredients: Dilinoleoylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC), Polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic acid), Choline
  • Forms: Softgel capsule, Oral liquid, IV injection (clinical/hospital use only)
  • Time to effect: Liver enzyme improvements typically seen within 4–12 weeks; structural liver benefits may take 3–6 months.
  • Side effects: Generally very well tolerated; occasional mild digestive upset is the most commonly reported issue.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
