Calf aches when I walk far
You set off fine. After a few hundred yards, one calf starts to ache, cramp, or feel tight. Some people stop and stand for a bit before walking on.
Walking muscles call for more blood than resting ones. If the arteries in your leg are narrowed, less blood gets through. Fatty plaque in the artery wall is one common reason, and high cholesterol can add to that build-up over time.
Calf pain has other causes too. A strained muscle, a pinched nerve in your back, or a vein problem can each do it. Smoking, diabetes, and older age raise the odds of narrowed leg arteries.
When to see someone
See your doctor if the ache comes at about the same distance each walk. Get help the same day for calf pain at rest, a pale or cold foot, or a toe sore that will not heal. Sudden swelling, heat, and redness in one calf needs urgent care, as does chest pain or breathlessness when you walk.
Below is a list of remedies people have long used for high cholesterol. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it. A grade is not a promise, so talk with your doctor first, above all if you take any medicine.
