What is Juzen-taiho-to? Juzen-taiho-to is a ten-herb Kampo formula that has been used in Japan and China for over a thousand years to restore vitality in people who are weak, anemic, or recovering from serious illness. It combines herbs that tonify what traditional medicine calls 'Qi' (energy/life force) and 'Blood' (nourishment and circulation), making it one of the most comprehensive restoration formulas in East Asian medicine. In modern Japan, it is a licensed pharmaceutical-grade herbal medicine prescribed alongside conventional cancer treatment. How does Juzen-taiho-to work? The formula works on several fronts at once — it helps regulate immune cell activity, supports healthy red blood cell production, reduces inflammation, and helps the body manage oxidative stress. Several of its herbs, especially astragalus and ginseng, contain polysaccharides and saponins that activate natural killer cells and other parts of the immune system. Together, the ten herbs create effects that none of them achieves as strongly on their own. What forms does Juzen-taiho-to come in? In Japan, pharmaceutical-grade granules (standardized extract sachets) are the most common form and are what most clinical studies use. Traditional decoctions brewed from raw herbs remain in use by practitioners. Tablets and capsules are available in Western markets and are convenient, though quality and standardization vary widely by brand. Where it comes from: Juzen-taiho-to originated in Chinese medicine texts from the Song Dynasty (around 960–1279 CE) and was adopted into Japanese Kampo practice centuries ago. It remains one of the most widely prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan today and is covered by Japan's national health insurance when used alongside cancer treatment — a reflection of its strong research record and clinical integration.

Helps

What does Juzen-taiho-to help with? Post-chemotherapy fatigue and recovery: Juzen-taiho-to is perhaps best studied for helping people recover from the exhaustion and physical depletion that follows chemotherapy. It appears to help the bone marrow bounce back faster, supporting healthy blood cell levels and reducing the severity of fatigue. Many Japanese oncology departments use it routinely alongside conventional treatment. Anemia and low blood counts: The formula's blood-nourishing herbs — particularly rehmannia, dong quai, and peony — have long been used to address anemia and pallor. Clinical use in Japan shows it can support red blood cell recovery, particularly in people whose counts drop during illness or treatment. Immune system support: Several herbs in the formula, especially astragalus and ginseng, help activate immune cells including natural killer cells and macrophages. This makes the formula useful not just during cancer treatment but for anyone with a weakened immune system who gets sick frequently. Cancer treatment side effects: Beyond fatigue, Juzen-taiho-to has been studied for reducing nausea, peripheral neuropathy, and general immune suppression caused by chemotherapy and radiation. Its use is supported by clinical guidelines from Japanese cancer societies. Poor appetite and weight loss: The digestive-support herbs in the formula — atractylodes, poria, and licorice — help stimulate appetite and improve the body's ability to absorb nutrients. This is especially relevant for people who have lost significant weight during illness. Chronic fatigue and low energy: Beyond cancer contexts, this formula is used broadly in Japan for people who simply feel chronically run down — low stamina, easy fatigue, difficulty recovering from exertion. The combination of energy-tonifying and nourishing herbs addresses this from multiple angles. General weakness after illness or surgery: Traditionally considered a premier 'convalescence' formula, Juzen-taiho-to is used to speed recovery after any major physical stress — surgery, serious infection, or prolonged illness — by restoring both immune function and physical strength. Cold sensitivity and poor circulation: Cinnamon bark and dong quai help warm the body and improve peripheral circulation, making this formula helpful for people who feel perpetually cold, have cold hands and feet, or poor circulation alongside their fatigue. Recurrent infections: People who catch every cold or suffer repeated infections may benefit from the formula's immune-regulatory properties, which help the body maintain a more robust baseline defense without overstimulating immune activity.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
