What is Adrenal Extract? Adrenal extract is made from the dried, ground adrenal glands of livestock — most often cattle — and contains a range of bioactive compounds that mirror or support what your own adrenal glands produce. It comes in two main forms: whole adrenal (which includes the inner medulla and outer cortex) and adrenal cortex extract (just the outer layer, without stimulating adrenaline-like compounds). Practitioners in integrative and functional medicine use it to support people whose adrenal glands seem to be underperforming due to prolonged stress, illness, or burnout. How does Adrenal Extract work? The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and produce hormones like cortisol, DHEA, and adrenaline that regulate your energy, immune response, and stress reaction. When these glands are under chronic strain, output can drop — leaving you exhausted, foggy, and unable to handle stress well. Adrenal extract is thought to supply raw biological material and low-level hormonal building blocks that help the glands repair and function more normally, essentially giving an overworked system a helping hand. What forms does Adrenal Extract come in? Adrenal cortex extract is the most commonly recommended form for daytime use because it avoids the stimulating adrenaline compounds. Whole adrenal glandulars are sometimes used in lower doses for broader support. Both are typically taken as capsules or tablets; liquid extracts exist but are less common. Quality varies significantly by brand — sourcing from grass-fed, hormone-free cattle is preferred. Where it comes from: Glandular therapy — using animal organ extracts to support corresponding human organs — was widely practiced in early 20th century medicine before synthetic hormones became available. Adrenal extracts were used in conventional medicine to treat Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency) in the 1930s and 1940s. As pharmaceutical cortisone and corticosteroids became available, glandular extracts fell out of mainstream use but persisted in naturopathic and integrative medicine circles, especially as interest in 'adrenal fatigue' as a functional concept grew in the late 20th century.

Helps

What does Adrenal Extract help with? Chronic fatigue and low energy: When the adrenal glands are worn down by months or years of stress, energy production drops noticeably. Adrenal extract provides biological building blocks that may help the glands return to more normal output, with many users reporting improved stamina within a few weeks of consistent use. Burnout and adrenal exhaustion: Burnout often comes with a flattened cortisol curve — low in the morning when it should be high, leading to that 'can't get going' feeling. Adrenal cortex extract is used by functional medicine practitioners to help restore a healthier daily rhythm to adrenal hormone output. Low stress tolerance: When the adrenals are struggling, even minor stressors can feel overwhelming. Adrenal extract may help buffer the stress response by supplying raw material to support more balanced cortisol production, making daily stressors easier to handle. Brain fog: Cortisol plays a key role in mental clarity and focus. When adrenal output is low, cognitive sharpness often suffers. Users frequently report that adrenal support supplements help lift the mental fuzziness that comes with prolonged fatigue. Morning fatigue and difficulty waking: Cortisol is supposed to peak in the morning to get you going — a pattern called the cortisol awakening response. Adrenal extract taken in the morning is thought to support this natural rhythm, making it easier to wake and function early in the day. Low blood pressure (orthostatic symptoms): Adrenal hormones — particularly aldosterone — help regulate blood pressure and fluid balance. People with sluggish adrenal function sometimes experience lightheadedness on standing. Adrenal cortex extract may help support the hormonal side of blood pressure regulation. Post-illness recovery: Serious illness, surgery, or long-term infection can tax the adrenal glands significantly. Glandular support is sometimes used in integrative settings during recovery to help restore adrenal tone and normal energy levels more quickly. Salt and sugar cravings: Craving salt is a hallmark sign of low aldosterone, an adrenal hormone. Sugar cravings can reflect unstable blood sugar tied to low cortisol. Adrenal extract is used to address the hormonal root of these cravings rather than just the symptoms.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
