Hochuekkito (Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang in Chinese medicine) is a ten-herb Kampo formula with over 700 years of documented use in East Asia. It was originally designed to address what traditional medicine calls 'Qi deficiency' — a pattern of deep fatigue, poor digestion, low immunity, and general weakness. Today it remains one of the most prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan, where it is approved and manufactured to pharmaceutical standards.

The formula works through multiple pathways at once: it helps regulate immune system activity (shifting the balance between different immune responses), supports gut health and nutrient absorption, and appears to help the body manage physical and mental stress more effectively. The combination of adaptogenic herbs like astragalus and ginseng with digestive herbs like atractylodes and citrus peel is designed to restore energy from the inside out — starting with digestion and building outward to immunity and stamina.

In Japan, Hochuekkito is most commonly dispensed as standardized granule powder (sachets dissolved in hot water), which is covered under Japan's national health insurance for approved conditions. Tablets are also available. Traditional decoction (simmering raw herbs) is used by practitioners in Chinese medicine traditions. Standardized Kampo granules (especially Tsumura brand TJ-41) are the form used in most published clinical research.

• Licorice root tea — Licorice is a harmonizing herb in Hochuekkito. Licorice root tea provides mild anti-inflammatory and digestive support — though long-term high-dose use should be avoided.
• Jujube (red dates) — Jujube fruit is included in the Hochuekkito formula and is widely eaten in East Asian diets as a nourishing food for energy, digestion, and calm — available dried or as a tea.
• Fresh ginger — Ginger is one of the formula's components and is easy to add to food and drinks daily. It supports digestion, circulation, and warmth — all central to what Hochuekkito is designed to do.
