What is Reishi Mushroom? Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a shiny, reddish-brown bracket fungus that grows on hardwood trees across Asia. It has been central to Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than 2,000 years — prized under the name Lingzhi as a supreme adaptogen and longevity herb. Because wild reishi is rare and bitter, most modern preparations use cultivated mushroom extract standardized for its key active compounds. How does Reishi Mushroom work? Reishi's beta-glucan polysaccharides are recognized by immune cells, helping ramp up the body's natural defenses without over-stimulating the immune system. Its ganoderic acid triterpenoids act more like adaptogens — calming the nervous system, easing inflammation, and supporting liver function. Together, these two compound families cover a remarkably broad range of benefits from one mushroom. What forms does Reishi Mushroom come in? Dual-extract tinctures or standardized capsules (targeting 20–30% polysaccharides and > 2% triterpenoids) deliver the most complete active profile. Whole powders vary widely in potency depending on whether they use the fruiting body or mycelium on grain — fruiting body extracts consistently show higher active compound levels. Traditional tea/decoction is effective but requires long simmering ( 1–2 hours ) to release compounds properly. Where it comes from: Reishi appears in the oldest Chinese pharmacopoeias, including the Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 100 CE), where it is ranked a 'superior herb' — meaning safe for long-term use and capable of promoting vitality rather than merely treating disease. It was historically so rare and expensive that only emperors and court physicians had access, earning it mythic status as the 'Herb of Spiritual Potency.' Cultivation techniques developed in the 1970s in Japan and China made widespread use possible.

Helps

What does Reishi Mushroom help with? Weak or sluggish immune system: Reishi's beta-glucans activate natural killer cells, macrophages, and T-lymphocytes — the front-line soldiers of your immune system. Regular use appears to help the immune system respond more efficiently without tipping into over-reaction, making it useful for both under-active immunity and immune-related inflammation. Chronic fatigue and low energy: Several clinical trials in people with fatigue-related conditions — including neurasthenia and chronic fatigue following illness — have shown meaningful improvements in energy and overall wellbeing with reishi supplementation. It works partly by supporting mitochondrial function and reducing inflammatory load that drains energy. Sleep problems and insomnia: Reishi's adenosine content and its effect on the nervous system appear to gently promote deeper, more restful sleep. Human trials have shown improvements in sleep duration and quality, and the calming effect of ganoderic acids may also reduce the racing mind that keeps many people awake. Anxiety and stress: As a classic adaptogen, reishi helps buffer the body's stress response, making day-to-day stressors feel more manageable. People using reishi regularly often report feeling calmer and more emotionally steady — an effect that builds over several weeks of consistent use. High blood pressure: Reishi triterpenoids have shown mild blood-pressure-lowering effects in clinical studies, likely by acting on enzymes involved in blood vessel tone. It's not a replacement for medication in significant hypertension, but may be a useful complementary support. High cholesterol: Ganoderic acids interfere with an enzyme in the liver's cholesterol production pathway, and some clinical studies have found modest reductions in LDL and total cholesterol with reishi supplementation. Effects are moderate and most evident with consistent long-term use. Cancer-related fatigue and immune support: Reishi is one of the most studied medicinal mushrooms in oncology integrative care. Multiple trials — particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy — have shown improvements in immune markers, fatigue levels, and quality of life. It is used as a complement to conventional treatment, not a replacement. Frequent colds and infections: By priming immune cells before a threat arrives, reishi may help the body fight off infections faster and more effectively. Traditional use for preventing seasonal illness is now supported by evidence showing enhanced immune surveillance with regular reishi use. Liver health and detox support: Ganoderic acids have demonstrated liver-protective properties in clinical and observational research, particularly in people with elevated liver enzymes or exposure to environmental toxins. Reishi has a long traditional history as a liver tonic and this is one of its most consistent modern findings. Blood sugar regulation: Reishi polysaccharides have shown modest blood-sugar-lowering effects in people with type 2 diabetes in some trials, likely by improving insulin sensitivity and slowing glucose absorption. This effect is supportive rather than potent — best used alongside dietary changes.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
