Tender spots all over
You press a spot on your neck, hip, or upper back and it hurts far more than it should. The sore spots turn up all over the body, on both sides. Even a hug, a bra strap, or a tight waistband can feel sharp.
With fibromyalgia, the body seems to turn up the volume on pain signals. Light pressure can feel like a deep bruise, even when the skin looks normal. Bad sleep, stress, or cold damp weather often make the spots feel worse for a while.
Other things can cause sore spots too. A low thyroid level, low vitamin D, and some cholesterol drugs can leave muscles tender. Simple blood tests can rule those out.
When to see someone
See a doctor if one spot is hot, red, or swollen, if you run a fever, or if you are losing weight without trying. Book a same-week visit for new tenderness of the scalp or temples after age 50, jaw pain when you chew, or any change in your sight. New weakness, numbness, or a spreading rash also needs to be checked.
Below is a list of traditional remedies linked to this condition. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has been done on it, not how well it will do for you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you try any of them, above all if you take other medicines.
