What is Keishi-bukuryo-gan? Keishi-bukuryo-gan (KBG) is one of the most widely prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan, derived from the classical Chinese text 'Jin Gui Yao Lue' (Essentials of the Golden Cabinet) written around the 3rd century CE. It combines five botanicals that each contribute to its overall effect on circulation, inflammation, and hormonal balance. In modern Japan, it is available as a standardized over-the-counter and prescription-grade extract used by gynecologists and Kampo practitioners alike. How does Keishi-bukuryo-gan work? The formula is thought to improve blood flow to the pelvic region, reduce stagnation (a concept in both Chinese and Japanese medicine referring to sluggish circulation and fluid buildup), and gently modulate inflammation. Modern research suggests its herbs work together to lower prostaglandins that drive menstrual cramps, reduce oxidative stress, and influence estrogen metabolism — which may explain its effect on fibroids and menopausal symptoms. No single ingredient drives the effect; the combination is key. What forms does Keishi-bukuryo-gan come in? In Japan, KBG is most commonly taken as standardized granules (dissolved in warm water) or tablets, with brand names like Tsumura TJ-25 being widely prescribed. Traditional decoctions (boiling the raw herbs) are still used by classical Kampo practitioners. Granule extracts are the most practical and well-studied form. Tablets offer convenience but may vary in standardization outside Japan. Where it comes from: This formula has been in continuous clinical use for over 1,700 years , first codified in Zhang Zhongjing's 'Jin Gui Yao Lue.' It was adopted into Japanese Kampo medicine and remains one of the top 10 most prescribed Kampo formulas in Japan today, used routinely in obstetrics and gynecology departments at major Japanese hospitals.

Helps

What does Keishi-bukuryo-gan help with? Menstrual pain and cramps (dysmenorrhea): KBG helps ease period pain by reducing the inflammatory signals (prostaglandins) that cause the uterus to cramp. Women taking it regularly often report that cramps become significantly milder within a few cycles — without the side effects of NSAIDs. Uterine fibroids: Several clinical studies in Japan have shown that KBG can reduce fibroid size and relieve associated symptoms like heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure. It appears to work by improving blood flow and reducing the estrogen-driven environment that fibroids thrive in. Menopausal hot flashes: KBG is one of the most studied Kampo formulas for menopause, particularly for hot flashes and night sweats. It is commonly used in Japan as an alternative to hormone therapy, especially for women who cannot or prefer not to take estrogen. Endometriosis: The formula's combination of anti-inflammatory and circulation-improving herbs makes it a popular supportive treatment for endometriosis. It may help reduce pelvic pain and inflammation without the hormonal side effects of conventional therapies. Irregular periods: By supporting healthy pelvic circulation and reducing stagnation, KBG can help encourage more regular menstrual cycles, particularly in women whose irregularity is associated with blood flow issues or hormonal imbalance. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): Women with PMS-related symptoms like bloating, irritability, breast tenderness, and pelvic heaviness often find KBG helpful, as it addresses both the physical congestion and low-grade inflammation that drive many premenstrual complaints. Pelvic pain and blood stagnation: In Kampo medicine, many pelvic conditions — from chronic pain to heavy periods — are linked to poor blood circulation in the lower abdomen. KBG is specifically formulated to address this, improving flow and reducing the tissue congestion that causes discomfort. Ovarian cysts (polycystic ovary concerns): While not a first-line treatment, KBG has been used adjunctively in cases of ovarian cysts and PCOS-related concerns, particularly when symptoms include pelvic heaviness, irregular cycles, and poor circulation.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
