What is Ashokarishta? Ashokarishta is a time-honored Ayurvedic fermented herbal preparation — known as an 'arishta' — crafted primarily from the bark of Saraca asoca (the Ashoka tree), combined with 14 or more supporting herbs including Dhataki flowers, Musta, Haritaki, and Amalaki. The fermentation process is central to this formula: it not only preserves the liquid for long-term use but also enhances the bioavailability of the active plant compounds. It has been used in classical Ayurvedic medicine for over a thousand years and is still widely prescribed by Ayurvedic practitioners across India and South Asia today. How does Ashokarishta work? The Ashoka bark at the heart of this formula contains catechins, tannins, and glycosides that are thought to help regulate the uterine lining, reduce excessive bleeding, and ease uterine muscle spasms that cause cramping. Supporting herbs like Musta and Haritaki contribute anti-inflammatory and digestive-balancing effects. The natural alcohol produced during fermentation (typically 5–10% ) acts as a natural solvent and preservative, helping carry fat-soluble plant compounds more efficiently into the body. What forms does Ashokarishta come in? The liquid arishta form is the traditional and most widely studied preparation — the standard dose is 15–30 mL taken twice daily with equal parts water after meals. Tablet and capsule forms of Ashoka bark extract are also available for those preferring a non-liquid option, though these lack the full multi-herb synergy of the fermented preparation. Where it comes from: Ashokarishta appears in classical Ayurvedic texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam and Sharangdhara Samhita, making it one of the most historically documented formulas for gynaecological health in the Ayurvedic tradition. The name references the Ashoka tree — 'Ashoka' literally meaning 'without sorrow' in Sanskrit — which was revered in ancient India for its connection to women's wellbeing. The formula has remained largely unchanged for over a millennium and continues to be manufactured under official Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India standards.

Helps

What does Ashokarishta help with? Heavy periods (menorrhagia): This is Ashokarishta's most well-supported traditional and clinical use. The Ashoka bark compounds appear to help tone and regulate the uterine lining, reducing the amount of blood lost during menstruation. Women with consistently heavy cycles are often the most likely to notice a meaningful difference within a few months of use. Painful periods (dysmenorrhea): Compounds in Ashoka bark act as mild antispasmodics, helping to relax the uterine muscle contractions that cause cramping. Musta and Haritaki in the formula add anti-inflammatory support, which may further ease the pain and discomfort around the time of menstruation. Irregular menstrual cycles: Ashokarishta is used in Ayurvedic practice to help bring regularity to cycles that are delayed, inconsistent, or unpredictable. Its multi-herb composition is believed to gently support hormonal balance over time, particularly when irregularity is linked to stress or mild hormonal fluctuation. Uterine fibroids (supportive care): While not a replacement for medical treatment, Ashokarishta is traditionally used to help manage the symptoms associated with fibroids — particularly heavy bleeding and pelvic discomfort. Its toning effect on the uterus and its hemostatic (bleeding-slowing) properties make it a common adjunct recommendation in integrative Ayurvedic care. PMS and premenstrual discomfort: The anti-spasmodic and mild adaptogenic qualities of the formula may ease common PMS symptoms including bloating, cramping, mood dips, and lower-back heaviness in the days before menstruation begins. Leucorrhoea (abnormal vaginal discharge): Ashokarishta has a long traditional history of use for leucorrhoea — excessive or discolored vaginal discharge. The astringent tannins from Ashoka bark and the supportive herbs are thought to help reduce inflammation and restore normal secretion balance in the reproductive tract. Perimenopause symptoms: Some Ayurvedic practitioners recommend Ashokarishta during the perimenopausal transition to help manage irregular, heavy, or unpredictable bleeding that commonly occurs as cycles begin to change. It is not a hormonal treatment but may provide symptomatic support during this period. Anemia related to heavy periods: By reducing menstrual blood loss over time, Ashokarishta may indirectly support iron levels and help prevent the mild iron-deficiency anemia that commonly develops in women with chronically heavy periods. It is often combined with iron-supportive herbs in Ayurvedic practice. Endometriosis (supportive care): Ashokarishta is used as adjunct supportive care for endometriosis symptoms — primarily heavy bleeding and cramping — in integrative Ayurvedic settings. There is no direct clinical trial evidence for endometriosis specifically, but its anti-inflammatory and uterine-regulating properties make it a logical traditional choice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
