The app remembers what you have started, including Milk Thistle, reminds you when to take it, and records whether it helped — so the next decision is based on your own notes rather than memory.
Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family whose spiny purple-flowered plant has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years. The primary active fraction, silymarin, is extracted from the plant's seeds and comprises a family of closely related flavonolignans, of which silybin (also called silibinin) is the most biologically active and best-studied component. Standardized extracts are typically calibrated to contain 70–80% silymarin by weight.
Silymarin exerts hepatoprotective effects through several converging mechanisms: it acts as a potent antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species and upregulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. It also inhibits the hepatic uptake of certain toxins by competing for membrane transport proteins, and it suppresses pro-inflammatory signaling pathways including NF-κB and TNF-α, reducing hepatic inflammation and fibrosis progression. Additionally, silymarin promotes hepatocyte regeneration by stimulating ribosomal RNA synthesis.
Standardized capsules or tablets (70–80% silymarin) are the most validated forms in clinical trials, typically dosed at 140 mg silymarin per capsule. Phytosome complexes (e.g., Siliphos/Silymarin-Phosphatidylcholine) offer enhanced bioavailability and are increasingly studied. Teas and loose herb preparations contain very low silymarin concentrations due to poor water solubility and are not considered therapeutic equivalents to standardized extracts.
Milk thistle has been used as a liver and gallbladder remedy since ancient Greek and Roman times; the physician Dioscorides described it in the first century CE. European physicians used it extensively through the medieval period for treating 'liver complaints,' and it remains one of the most commercially successful herbal supplements worldwide, particularly in Germany where standardized silymarin products (e.g., Legalon) have been prescribed for liver conditions since the 1960s.
Some reactions to Milk Thistle need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.
Call 911 if your face, lips or throat swell. Do the same for hives or trouble breathing. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Call your doctor within a few days for a rash, loose stools that do not stop, or cramps. Call sooner if you take diabetes drugs and feel shaky, sweaty or faint. That can mean low blood sugar.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
