What is Yi Guan Jian? Yi Guan Jian is a classical Chinese herbal formula first recorded in the Qing Dynasty text 'Xu Ming Yi Lei An' (Supplement to Famous Physicians' Cases) by Wei Zhi-Xiu around 1770. It combines six herbs to simultaneously nourish the liver and kidney Yin (the body's cooling, moistening resources) while gently moving Qi to relieve pain and tightness. Unlike stronger liver-moving formulas, Yi Guan Jian is specifically designed in traditional practice for people who are considered too deficient and depleted to handle aggressive treatment — it is intended to nourish while it moves. How does Yi Guan Jian work? In Chinese medicine theory, the formula is thought to work by replenishing the liver and kidney's fluid reserves (Yin), which are understood as the foundation of smooth energy flow. When these reserves run low, energy is believed to stagnate and cause pain, irritability, and dryness. The bulk of the formula (heavy Rehmannia and Lycium) is traditionally used to deeply moisten and rebuild these reserves, while a small amount of Melia fruit is thought to break up stagnation and relieve pain — a traditional balance of nourishing and moving. Some of the individual herbs in this formula have been the subject of preliminary laboratory and animal research suggesting they may support liver cell protection and reduce inflammation, but these findings have not been validated in rigorous clinical trials and should not be taken as clinically proven effects of the formula as a whole. What forms does Yi Guan Jian come in? Traditional preparation is a water decoction simmered fresh daily. Modern preparations include granule extracts (dissolved in hot water), capsules, and patent pills — all of which are convenient and clinically used. Granules and decoctions are generally considered closest to the classical preparation. Where it comes from: Created by Qing Dynasty physician Wei Zhi-Xiu as an alternative to harsher liver-moving formulas for patients who were already depleted and weak. It has remained one of the most commonly used TCM formulas for liver Yin deficiency with Qi stagnation for over 250 years , and is widely used today in integrative hepatology in China and Taiwan.

Helps

What does Yi Guan Jian help with? Chronic liver disease (hepatitis, fatty liver): Yi Guan Jian has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for patterns associated with liver conditions. Its herbs are thought to help protect liver cells and support liver function — particularly in people who present with dryness, depletion, and fatigue alongside their liver condition. Any evidence from Chinese clinical settings is largely observational or preliminary, and the formula has not been validated by rigorous controlled trials for these conditions. Liver fibrosis and cirrhosis support: Some of the formula's key herbs, particularly Rehmannia and Angelica, have been explored in preliminary laboratory and animal research for possible effects on liver fibrosis. In traditional Chinese medicine practice, this formula has long been used as a supportive measure alongside other care for depleted patients with chronic liver disease. These uses remain traditionally grounded rather than clinically proven. Rib-side and flank pain: Pain or tension in the ribs and flanks is the hallmark symptom this formula was traditionally designed to address. In traditional practice, it is thought to work by rebuilding fluid reserves that allow energy to flow freely, so that pain and tightness may gradually ease rather than being forcefully dispersed. Acid reflux and GERD: Traditional practitioners have long used Yi Guan Jian for digestive discomfort — including reflux, nausea, and stomach pain — that fits a pattern of stomach Yin deficiency with liver overaction on the digestive system. This use is based on traditional pattern diagnosis rather than clinical trial evidence. Dry mouth and throat: Persistent dryness — especially in the mouth, throat, and digestive tract — is a core symptom this formula is traditionally used to address. The moistening herbs (Rehmannia, Ophiopogon, Glehnia) are thought in traditional practice to specifically target this kind of systemic dryness associated with depleted Yin. Liver enzyme elevation (AST/ALT): Yi Guan Jian formulations have been used in traditional Chinese medicine contexts for patterns associated with liver stress. Some observational reports from Chinese clinical settings suggest possible effects on liver enzyme levels, but these reports are not substitutes for controlled clinical trials, and the formula cannot be considered clinically proven to reduce AST or ALT. Anxiety and irritability from burnout: Traditional practitioners have long used this formula for irritability, restlessness, and emotional volatility that arise in the context of chronic overwork, stress, or poor sleep — understood in Chinese medicine as depletion of the liver's nourishing reserves. This formula's deep nourishing action is traditionally thought to gradually calm these symptoms by addressing their root pattern. Menopausal dryness and heat: In traditional TCM gynecology practice, Yi Guan Jian has long been used during perimenopause for dryness, night sweats, and heat sensations that fit a Yin deficiency pattern. This use is based on traditional pattern-matching and observational practice rather than clinical trial evidence.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
