What is Cabbage Juice? Cabbage juice is the raw liquid extracted from fresh cabbage, one of the most studied traditional remedies for stomach and digestive problems. It is uniquely rich in a compound nicknamed 'Vitamin U' — a shorthand for its ulcer-healing reputation — along with a wide range of plant compounds that calm inflammation and support the gut lining. Red and green cabbage each offer slightly different nutrient profiles, with red cabbage higher in antioxidant anthocyanins. How does Cabbage Juice work? Cabbage juice works primarily by helping repair and protect the lining of your stomach and intestines. Its key compound, S-methylmethionine (Vitamin U), supports the production of the protective mucus layer that shields your gut wall from acid and irritants. Glucosinolates and indole compounds also help fight the H. pylori bacteria commonly responsible for ulcers, while its anti-inflammatory nutrients help calm an irritated digestive tract. What forms does Cabbage Juice come in? Fresh-pressed raw juice is the most potent and best-studied form, as heat degrades Vitamin U and some glucosinolates. Fermented cabbage juice (similar to sauerkraut brine) adds probiotic benefit. Freeze-dried powders and capsules offer convenience but may have reduced potency for the specific ulcer-healing compounds. Where it comes from: Cabbage has been used medicinally for over 4,000 years across Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia. Ancient Romans used it to treat hangovers and stomach ailments. The modern scientific interest in cabbage juice for ulcers surged in the 1940s and 1950s, when Stanford physician Garnett Cheney conducted clinical trials showing rapid ulcer healing in patients drinking fresh cabbage juice daily — a finding that introduced the term 'Vitamin U' to medicine.

Helps

What does Cabbage Juice help with? Stomach ulcers (peptic ulcers): Cabbage juice is perhaps best known for its ability to help heal stomach ulcers. It contains compounds that stimulate the stomach to produce more of its protective mucus layer, which shields the gut lining from acid and damage. Early clinical work showed ulcers healing significantly faster in patients drinking fresh cabbage juice compared to standard treatment timelines of the era. Acid reflux and GERD: The gut-lining-protective and anti-inflammatory properties of cabbage juice may help reduce the irritation caused by stomach acid splashing back into the esophagus. It helps soothe inflamed tissue and supports a healthier stomach environment overall, making reflux symptoms less frequent for some people. Gastritis and stomach inflammation: Cabbage juice's anti-inflammatory plant compounds help calm an inflamed stomach lining directly. Its glutamine content also feeds the cells lining your stomach, supporting faster healing and reduced irritation from conditions like gastritis. Leaky gut and gut lining damage: L-glutamine and Vitamin U work together to nourish and repair the intestinal lining. A stronger gut lining means fewer unwanted substances slipping into the bloodstream, which is the core problem in leaky gut. Cabbage juice is a gentle, food-based way to support this repair process. H. pylori infection support: Glucosinolate breakdown products in cabbage, particularly sulforaphane precursors, have demonstrated ability to inhibit H. pylori — the bacteria responsible for most stomach ulcers. Cabbage juice may work as a supportive natural addition alongside conventional H. pylori treatment, though it is not a standalone cure. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): The anti-inflammatory and gut-lining-supportive properties of cabbage juice may help reduce IBS symptoms like cramping and irregular digestion in some people. Fermented versions also add beneficial bacteria that support a healthier gut environment. Liver detox support: Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage are well known for supporting the liver's natural detox pathways. Indole-3-carbinol and glucosinolate compounds in cabbage juice help activate liver enzymes that process and clear toxins from the body. Skin inflammation and acne (internal): Because gut health and skin health are closely linked, cabbage juice's ability to reduce gut inflammation and improve the gut microbiome may translate into clearer, calmer skin over time. Its antioxidant Vitamin C content also supports collagen production and reduces oxidative stress that worsens acne. Blood sugar regulation: Cabbage and its juice have shown modest blood-sugar-lowering effects in research, likely due to their fiber content (in whole cabbage) and anti-inflammatory compounds. The juice may help blunt post-meal blood sugar spikes when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
