What is Hangeshashinto (Kampo)? Hangeshashinto is a classical seven-herb Kampo formula whose roots trace back to the Chinese medical text Shang Han Lun (circa 200 CE). It was adopted into Japanese Kampo practice and is today one of the most rigorously studied traditional formulas in modern oncology settings. In Japan, it is commercially standardized and widely prescribed by physicians alongside conventional cancer treatment. How does Hangeshashinto (Kampo) work? The formula works through several complementary pathways: its bitter alkaloids (from Coptis and Scutellaria) calm gut inflammation and inhibit bacterial overgrowth in the mouth and intestines, while ginger and Pinellia ease nausea by settling the stomach's signaling. Licorice and jujube add a soothing, protective quality to mucous membranes. Together, these herbs address what Kampo calls a 'hot-cold disharmony' in the digestive tract — essentially, an imbalance between inflammation and functional weakness. What forms does Hangeshashinto (Kampo) come in? In Japan, TJ-14 (Tsumura brand granules) is the most clinically studied and most commonly prescribed form. For oral mucositis specifically, granules dissolved in warm water and used as a gargle before swallowing appear to produce the best results — direct contact with mouth sores is considered part of the mechanism. Outside Japan, encapsulated extracts and raw decoction are available through specialty Kampo and TCM practitioners. Where it comes from: The formula originates from Zhang Zhongjing's Shang Han Lun, written around 200 CE during the Han Dynasty in China. It was brought to Japan alongside Chinese medicine and refined into the Kampo tradition over centuries. Today it remains one of the 148 Kampo formulas covered by Japan's national health insurance for prescription use, reflecting its integration into mainstream Japanese clinical practice.

Helps

What does Hangeshashinto (Kampo) help with? Chemotherapy mouth sores (oral mucositis): This is Hangeshashinto's most researched benefit. When the granules are dissolved in water and used as a gargle before swallowing, the formula directly contacts inflamed mouth tissue, reducing pain, severity, and duration of sores caused by chemotherapy. Multiple clinical trials in Japan have shown meaningful reductions in mucositis grade in cancer patients. Nausea and vomiting: Ginger and Pinellia — two of the core herbs — have well-established anti-nausea properties. The formula has been used for centuries to calm an unsettled stomach and is used in modern Kampo practice alongside antiemetic medications in chemotherapy patients. Diarrhea from chemotherapy or IBS: Berberine-containing herbs in the formula help regulate gut motility and reduce intestinal inflammation. Clinical use in Japan includes chemotherapy-related diarrhea, and traditional use covers chronic loose stools from gut weakness or inflammation. Gastritis and stomach inflammation: The formula has traditionally been used for stomach pain with a feeling of fullness, bloating, and mild nausea — what Kampo describes as 'epigastric stuffiness.' Its anti-inflammatory and mucosal-protective herbs work together to soothe an irritated stomach lining. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): Hangeshashinto addresses both the cramping and the irregular bowel habits common in IBS by calming gut inflammation and supporting healthy digestive rhythm. It is used in Japanese clinical practice for functional bowel complaints that have not responded fully to standard treatment. Stomatitis from cancer treatment: Beyond mucositis from systemic chemotherapy, the formula is also studied for oral stomatitis from targeted therapies (such as mTOR inhibitors like everolimus), with clinical trials showing reduced severity and faster healing compared to standard oral care alone. Digestive discomfort and bloating: One of the core traditional uses of this formula is for 'pi' — a Kampo concept describing a sensation of blockage or heaviness in the upper abdomen. It is suited for people who feel full quickly, bloated, or have mixed constipation-and-loose-stool patterns. Loss of appetite during illness: Ginseng and jujube in the formula are classic Kampo tonics used to support digestion and restore appetite during recovery from illness or cancer treatment fatigue. The formula is often prescribed to help patients maintain nutritional intake during chemotherapy. Gut inflammation: The berberine and baicalin content provide meaningful anti-inflammatory effects in the intestinal lining. This makes the formula relevant beyond oncology — it is used in Japanese clinical practice for inflammatory bowel conditions and chronic gut discomfort.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
