What is Byakkokaninjinto? Byakkokaninjinto is a five-herb Kampo formula derived from the classical Chinese medical text Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases), written around 200 CE. It combines cooling mineral and botanical ingredients with Panax ginseng to address what traditional medicine calls 'excess heat with Qi deficiency' — a pattern marked by strong thirst, dry mouth, profuse sweating, and a red complexion. The formula has been used for over a millennium across East Asian medical traditions and remains an officially approved Kampo preparation in Japan today. How does Byakkokaninjinto work? The formula works through complementary actions: gypsum and anemarrhena together help reduce inflammatory heat signals and support healthy blood sugar regulation, while ginseng helps restore energy and fluid balance. Together, the herbs appear to support insulin sensitivity, calm inflammatory pathways involved in skin conditions, and reduce the sensation of dryness and thirst. The licorice and rice components help buffer the potency of the stronger cooling herbs and protect digestion. What forms does Byakkokaninjinto come in? In Japan, Byakkokaninjinto is most commonly dispensed as standardized granule packets (e.g., Tsumura TJ-54), which are dissolved in hot water and drunk as a tea. Traditional practitioners may also prepare it as a freshly boiled decoction. Powdered and tablet extracts exist but are less common outside of Japan and East Asia. Where it comes from: Originally recorded in Zhang Zhongjing's Shang Han Lun (approx. 200 CE), this formula was designed to treat a specific heat syndrome pattern in febrile illness. It was adopted and refined in Japanese Kampo medicine during the Edo period and has been continuously prescribed for conditions involving intense thirst and heat signs — a pattern that modern practitioners often map to conditions like diabetes, Sjogren's syndrome, and inflammatory skin disease.

Helps

What does Byakkokaninjinto help with? Excessive thirst and dry mouth: This is the formula's core traditional indication — it was specifically designed for people who feel intensely hot, sweat heavily, and cannot quench their thirst. Modern clinical use confirms it can meaningfully reduce dry mouth and polydipsia, especially when these symptoms accompany metabolic or inflammatory conditions. Type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control): Several clinical studies have shown that Byakkokaninjinto can help lower fasting blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity when used alongside standard diabetes care. The anemarrhena component appears to play a key role in supporting glucose metabolism. Atopic dermatitis and eczema: In people whose eczema is worsened by heat — red, hot, itchy, weeping skin — this formula's cooling and anti-inflammatory properties may reduce flares and calm itching. It is particularly favored in Kampo practice for the 'hot and dry' eczema pattern. Dry mouth from Sjogren's syndrome: A small but notable body of clinical evidence supports its use in Sjogren's syndrome, where the immune system attacks saliva glands. It appears to relieve the subjective sense of dryness and thirst without suppressing the immune system the way conventional drugs do. Hot flashes and heat intolerance: The formula's traditional 'heat-clearing' role maps naturally onto hot flashes, especially in menopausal women who also experience thirst and flushing. It is sometimes used in Kampo gynecology for this pattern, though clinical trial data in this specific context is limited. Polydipsia (excessive drinking due to thirst): Polydipsia — the urge to constantly drink due to persistent thirst — is one of the formula's most direct traditional targets. It has been used clinically in Japan for polydipsia associated with diabetes and other metabolic conditions. Skin inflammation and itch: Beyond full eczema diagnoses, the formula is used in Kampo for any itchy, inflamed skin with a hot quality. Its cooling herbs may dampen inflammatory mediators that drive redness and itch. Steroid-induced diabetes (adjunct support): Some Japanese clinical settings use Byakkokaninjinto as an adjunct in patients who develop elevated blood sugar as a side effect of corticosteroid therapy, aiming to ease thirst and support glucose control during steroid treatment.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
