Bloated after every meal
You eat, and within an hour your belly feels tight and puffed up. Your waistband digs in. By evening you may look a size bigger than you did at breakfast.
Gas builds up as food breaks down in your gut. Eating fast, big meals, fizzy drinks, or gulping air can add to it. Some people also hold more fluid or have slower gut muscles.
Some foods make more gas than others. Beans, onions, wheat, dairy, and sugar-free sweeteners are common ones. Stress and the days before a period can play a part too.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the bloating comes with weight loss you did not plan, blood in your stool, or black stools. Go too if you are often sick, cannot keep food down, or have belly pain that wakes you at night. Bloating that never settles, or a lump or swelling you can feel, needs a check, above all if you are over 50.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies people use for digestive support. Each one has a grade that shows how much research has looked at it, not how well it will do for you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you try something new, above all if you take other medicines.
