What is Prebiotics? Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This can help promote gut health and overall well-being. How does it work? Prebiotics work by serving as a food source for the beneficial bacteria in the gut. This helps to promote the growth and activity of these bacteria, which can help improve gut health and support overall well-being. What are the active ingredients that are important for its medicinal properties? The active ingredient in prebiotics is typically fiber, which is not digested by the body but instead is fermented by the gut bacteria. What forms does it come in? Prebiotics can be found in various forms, including supplements, functional foods, and dietary fibers. What if there’s an imbalance or deficiency? If there is an imbalance or deficiency of prebiotics in the gut, this can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria, which can negatively impact gut health and overall well-being. When was it first used for medicinal purposes? The concept of prebiotics was first introduced in the 1990s, but its use as a medicinal treatment has only become more widespread in recent years. Summary: Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, improving gut health and overall well-being. They can be found in various forms, including supplements, functional foods, and dietary fibers, and are rich in foods such as chicory root, dandelion greens, garlic, and bananas. An imbalance or deficiency of prebiotics can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria, and some possible side effects include flatulence, bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The recommended daily dose is between 3-5 grams per day and it is best to take it in the morning, with food.

Helps

What does Prebiotics help with? Digestive health and bloating: Prebiotics shift the gut toward a healthier bacterial balance, reducing the overgrowth of gas-producing or inflammatory microbes. Most people see improved stool consistency and less discomfort within a week or two of consistent use — though starting slowly helps avoid initial gas. Constipation: Inulin and FOS act as gentle bulking agents that help move things along in your colon. They draw water into the bowel and increase stool frequency, making them a well-supported natural option for occasional or chronic constipation. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome): Low-dose GOS and certain fermentable fibers have been shown to reduce IBS symptoms including pain, bloating, and irregular stools. Dosing matters a lot here — too much can backfire, so a gradual, low-and-slow approach works best for people with sensitive guts. Immune system support: About 70% of your immune system lives in and around your gut, and a well-nourished microbiome helps calibrate immune responses. GOS in particular has been shown to lower rates of respiratory infections and reduce allergy risk, especially in early childhood. Blood sugar and insulin sensitivity: Prebiotics slow glucose absorption, reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes, and improve insulin sensitivity over time. The SCFAs produced during fermentation also signal the pancreas and liver to handle glucose more efficiently. Anxiety and mood: The gut produces a large share of the body's serotonin, and a balanced microbiome plays a real role in mood regulation. Prebiotic supplementation has been shown to lower stress hormone levels and reduce attentional bias toward negative stimuli — early signs that it may support emotional resilience. Cholesterol and heart health: Beta-glucan and pectin bind cholesterol in the gut and help carry it out of the body before it's absorbed. Regular intake of these prebiotic fibers is associated with meaningfully lower LDL cholesterol levels. Weight management: Prebiotics increase feelings of fullness by slowing gastric emptying and stimulating gut hormones like GLP-1 and PYY that signal satiety. Over time, this can support modest but meaningful reductions in calorie intake and body weight. Infant and childhood gut health: GOS closely mirrors the oligosaccharides in human breast milk and is the best-studied prebiotic for infant microbiome development. It supports the growth of Bifidobacteria, reduces the risk of early infections, and may lower the likelihood of developing allergies. Bone mineral absorption: Inulin-type prebiotics have been shown to improve the absorption of calcium and magnesium from the gut, which may support bone density over time — particularly useful during adolescence and in older adults.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
