What is Silica / Silicon? Silicon is a naturally occurring trace mineral found throughout the human body, concentrated in connective tissues like bone, cartilage, skin, and arterial walls. It's the bioavailable form — orthosilicic acid — that the body actually absorbs and uses at the cellular level. While not classified as an essential nutrient with a formal RDA, growing research suggests silicon plays a meaningful role in keeping our structural tissues healthy and strong. How does Silica / Silicon work? Silicon helps stimulate the cells that produce collagen — the protein scaffold behind firm skin, strong hair, flexible joints, and dense bones. It also plays a role in mineralizing bone by helping calcium and phosphorus bind properly into bone matrix. Think of it as the mineral that helps your body's building materials stick together and stay organized. What forms does Silica / Silicon come in? Liquid ch-OSA drops (e.g., BioSil) have the strongest clinical backing for hair, skin, and bone benefits. Horsetail-based capsules are a popular traditional option but deliver lower bioavailable silicon. Colloidal silica gel (e.g., Silicea) is a traditional European remedy especially used for digestive and skin concerns. Silicon-rich mineral waters provide a gentle dietary source with reasonable absorption. Where it comes from: Silica has been used in traditional European herbal medicine for centuries, primarily through horsetail (Equisetum arvense), which contains among the highest plant concentrations of silica. German and French herbal traditions relied on horsetail preparations for strengthening connective tissue, healing wounds, and supporting the urinary tract. Modern supplement science in the late 20th century led to the development of more bioavailable forms like ch-OSA, shifting focus toward bone health, skin aging, and hair loss applications.

Helps

What does Silica / Silicon help with? Hair thinning and hair loss: Silicon supports the structural proteins in hair follicles, helping strands grow thicker and stronger. Clinical studies using ch-OSA show measurable improvements in hair tensile strength and thickness after consistent supplementation, making it one of silicon's best-supported uses. Weak or brittle nails: Nails are made largely of keratin, a protein that relies on silicon-dependent cross-linking to stay hard and resilient. Supplementing with bioavailable silicon has been shown to reduce nail brittleness and breakage in women with fragile nail syndrome. Skin aging and loss of firmness: Silicon boosts collagen production in skin cells, helping maintain the springiness and density that keeps skin looking youthful. Studies with ch-OSA show improvements in skin elasticity and surface texture over 20 weeks — effects driven by real structural changes, not just surface hydration. Bone density and osteoporosis support: Silicon is involved in the early stages of bone formation, helping lay down the collagen framework that calcium and phosphorus then mineralize. Higher dietary silicon intake is associated with better bone mineral density, particularly at the hip, in both men and women. Joint and cartilage health: Cartilage is rich in collagen and proteoglycans — both of which need silicon to form and maintain properly. While clinical trials specifically for joints are limited, silicon's role in collagen synthesis gives it a logical place in connective tissue support alongside glucosamine and collagen peptides. Connective tissue weakness: Tendons, ligaments, and fascia all depend on collagen integrity. Silicon supports the enzymes and cellular signals that drive collagen production, making it potentially useful for people recovering from connective tissue injuries or dealing with general structural weakness. Wound healing support: Traditional herbal use of horsetail for wound healing has some biological logic — silicon is involved in collagen remodeling and tissue repair. The evidence here is largely traditional and mechanistic rather than large-scale clinical, but the rationale is sound. Atherosclerosis and arterial health: Arterial walls are rich in silicon in healthy tissue, and concentrations drop in areas of plaque buildup. Some epidemiological research links higher silicon intake with better cardiovascular markers, though this remains an area of active investigation rather than established clinical practice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
