What is Silica (Bamboo Extract)? Silica from bamboo extract is one of the most bioavailable plant-based forms of silicon, a mineral your body uses to build and maintain collagen, keratin, and other structural proteins. Bamboo plants — particularly the internodal tissue — can contain up to 70% silica by dry weight, making them a remarkably concentrated natural source. Unlike synthetic silicon dioxide, bamboo-derived silica is naturally bound to organic compounds that make it easier for the body to absorb and use. How does Silica (Bamboo Extract) work? Silicon plays a direct role in stimulating the enzymes that produce collagen and elastin — the proteins that keep skin firm, joints flexible, and connective tissue strong. It also helps the body deposit calcium and phosphorus into bone matrix, supporting bone density. In hair and nails, silica strengthens the keratin protein scaffolding, which reduces breakage and improves resilience. What forms does Silica (Bamboo Extract) come in? Capsules and tablets are the most common and convenient forms for daily supplementation. Liquid extracts and stabilized orthosilicic acid solutions (like choline-stabilized OSA) tend to offer the highest bioavailability. Powders can be mixed into smoothies or water. Topical silica serums are also available for direct skin application but are considered a supportive rather than primary route. Where it comes from: Bamboo has been used medicinally for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. A substance called 'tabashir' — a silica-rich secretion found inside bamboo stems — was historically prized in both Indian and Chinese healing traditions as a tonic for strengthening the body, clearing respiratory conditions, and supporting overall vitality. Its modern application as a beauty and connective tissue supplement builds on this long history of use.

Helps

What does Silica (Bamboo Extract) help with? Hair thinning and breakage: Silica is a key building block of keratin, the protein that forms each strand of hair. Supplementing with bioavailable silicon has been shown to increase hair shaft thickness and reduce breakage, making it a popular choice for people dealing with fine, thinning, or brittle hair. Brittle or weak nails: Nails, like hair, are largely made of keratin and rely on adequate silica to stay strong and flexible. Regular silica supplementation is associated with noticeably harder, faster-growing nails and reduced splitting or peeling. Skin aging and loss of firmness: Silica supports the body's production of collagen and elastin — the structural proteins that keep skin plump, smooth, and elastic. As natural silicon levels decline with age, supplementing may help slow the visible signs of skin aging and improve overall skin texture. Joint pain and stiffness: Silicon is present in high concentrations in cartilage and the connective tissue surrounding joints. Adequate silica intake supports the structural integrity of cartilage, and some research suggests it may help reduce discomfort and support mobility in people with joint wear. Bone density and osteoporosis support: Silicon works alongside calcium and vitamin D to help mineralize bone tissue. Higher dietary silicon intake has been linked to greater bone mineral density in observational studies, making bamboo silica a complementary supplement in bone health protocols. Connective tissue weakness: Tendons, ligaments, and fascia all depend on collagen, and silica is directly involved in collagen synthesis. People recovering from injuries or dealing with hypermobility or connective tissue disorders may benefit from ensuring adequate silicon intake to support tissue repair and resilience. Wound healing: Silica plays a role in the early stages of tissue repair by supporting collagen formation at wound sites. There is preliminary evidence that adequate silicon supports faster and more organized tissue regeneration, though most evidence here is still developing. Gut lining support: Silicon is found in the mucosal lining of the gut and may help maintain the integrity of the intestinal wall. Some practitioners use silica as a supportive measure for leaky gut and digestive inflammation, though clinical research in this specific area remains limited.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
