What is Vitamin B7 (Biotin)? Biotin is one of the eight B vitamins and is essential for life — every cell in your body depends on it to process carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable energy. It acts as a helper molecule (coenzyme) for several critical enzymes that keep your metabolism running smoothly. Because your body cannot make biotin on its own, you need to get it from food or supplements. How does Vitamin B7 (Biotin) work? Biotin attaches to specific enzymes called carboxylases, activating them so they can carry out essential steps in energy production and the building of fatty acids and glucose. In hair follicles and skin cells, these same pathways support healthy keratin production — the protein that makes up hair, nails, and the outer skin layer. When biotin levels are adequate, these high-turnover tissues get the fuel they need to grow and repair normally. What forms does Vitamin B7 (Biotin) come in? Capsules and tablets are the most common supplement forms and tend to be accurately dosed. Gummies are popular but sometimes contain added sugars and may deliver inconsistent amounts. Liquid drops absorb quickly and are useful for those who struggle with pills. High-dose forms ( 5,000–10,000 mcg ) are widely marketed for hair and nails, though far lower doses are sufficient for general nutrition. Where it comes from: Biotin was first identified in the 1920s when researchers noticed that raw egg whites caused a deficiency syndrome (later called 'egg white injury') in animals. By the 1940s the compound had been isolated, named, and its structure confirmed. The name comes from the Greek 'bios,' meaning life — fitting for a nutrient involved in so many fundamental biological processes.

Helps

What does Vitamin B7 (Biotin) help with? Brittle nails: Biotin is one of the few supplements with actual human trial evidence for nail health. Studies have found that supplementing biotin leads to noticeably thicker nail plates and fewer splits and breakages in people with fragile nails. Most people see real improvement after about 3–6 months of consistent use. Hair thinning and hair loss: Biotin deficiency is a known cause of hair thinning and loss, and correcting a deficiency reliably restores normal hair growth. For people without a deficiency, the evidence is less certain, but many practitioners use it as part of broader hair support protocols given its role in keratin production. Blood sugar and diabetes support: Biotin plays a direct role in how the body manages glucose — it activates enzymes that regulate blood sugar and may improve how cells respond to insulin. Research in people with type 2 diabetes has shown that biotin, especially when combined with chromium, can help bring fasting blood sugar levels down. Skin dryness and rashes: Biotin deficiency classically causes a scaly, red skin rash, particularly around the face and diaper area in infants. Correcting the deficiency quickly resolves these symptoms. While high-dose biotin is often marketed for general skin glow, the strongest evidence is specifically for deficiency-related skin issues. Biotin deficiency: True biotin deficiency is uncommon but does occur — most often in people who eat large amounts of raw egg whites, take certain anti-seizure medications, or have a genetic disorder affecting biotin metabolism. Symptoms include hair loss, skin rash, depression, and fatigue, and they respond well to supplementation. Pregnancy nutritional support: Biotin requirements increase significantly during pregnancy, and research suggests that mild biotin depletion is more common in pregnant women than previously thought. It is included in most prenatal vitamins for this reason, supporting normal fetal development and the mother's metabolic demands. Nerve and brain health: Biotin is essential for fatty acid synthesis in myelin — the protective coating around nerve fibers. Low biotin levels are associated with neurological symptoms like tingling, numbness, and low mood, all of which improve with repletion. This is also the basis for its investigation in MS. Multiple sclerosis (high-dose, emerging research): Very high doses of biotin ( 100–300 mg /day, far above nutritional doses) are being studied as a potential treatment for progressive MS, based on the idea that boosting myelin repair pathways could slow nerve damage. Early trials showed promise, though larger studies have had mixed results, and this remains an active research area. Metabolic syndrome: Because biotin activates key enzymes in fat and glucose metabolism, researchers have explored its use in metabolic syndrome — the cluster of conditions including high blood sugar, excess belly fat, and abnormal cholesterol. Preliminary human data suggest it may modestly improve several of these markers.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
