What is Bromelain Enzyme (Topical)? Topical bromelain is a powerful enzyme preparation made from pineapple stem extract that is applied directly to the skin rather than swallowed. It works as a natural biological tool for clearing away damaged tissue, reducing swelling, and calming skin inflammation. Medical-grade topical bromelain products have been approved in some countries specifically for burn wound care, where they can remove dead tissue without surgery. How does Bromelain Enzyme (Topical) work? Bromelain's protease enzymes selectively break down proteins in dead, damaged, or inflamed tissue while largely leaving healthy tissue intact. This makes it especially useful for clearing burn eschar and wound debris — a process called enzymatic debridement. It also helps reduce swelling and redness by breaking down proteins involved in the inflammatory response and improving local circulation. What forms does Bromelain Enzyme (Topical) come in? Topical bromelain is available as over-the-counter gels and creams for bruising and minor skin inflammation, and as high-concentration prescription-strength enzymatic debridement agents (such as NexoBrid, approved in the EU and US for burn care). The medical-grade concentrate delivers a much higher enzyme dose than consumer products. Where it comes from: Pineapple has been used in folk medicine across Central and South America for generations to soothe skin wounds and reduce swelling. Modern pharmaceutical development of topical bromelain for burn debridement accelerated in the early 2000s, culminating in EU approval of NexoBrid (concentrate of bromelain enriched in proteolytic enzymes) in 2012 and US FDA approval in 2020 for removing eschar in adults with deep partial- and full-thickness burns.

Helps

What does Bromelain Enzyme (Topical) help with? Burn wounds and eschar removal: Topical bromelain is most clinically proven for removing the dead, hardened tissue (eschar) that forms after a burn injury. It works by digesting the damaged proteins in the eschar selectively, which clears the wound faster and often reduces the need for surgical skin cutting. Medical-grade bromelain gel applied under a dressing can achieve debridement within hours. Bruising and skin discoloration: Applied to bruised skin, bromelain helps break down the protein components of blood that pool under the skin after an injury, speeding up the body's natural reabsorption of the bruise. Many users notice faster fading of bruise color and reduced tenderness within a few days of consistent use. Post-surgical swelling and inflammation: Topical bromelain helps reduce localized swelling and inflammation around surgical sites or injured tissue by breaking down inflammatory proteins and improving local fluid drainage. It is used after facial surgeries, dental extractions, and minor procedures to calm redness and puffiness. Minor cuts and abrasions: On minor wounds, bromelain gel can gently remove debris and dead surface tissue, supporting a cleaner wound bed that heals more efficiently. Its anti-inflammatory action also helps reduce the redness and swelling that typically accompany small skin injuries. Skin inflammation and redness: Bromelain dampens the activity of inflammatory proteins in the skin, which can reduce visible redness, heat, and swelling in inflamed areas. Some topical formulations are used as part of skincare routines to calm reactive or irritated skin. Wound healing support: By clearing away dead tissue and lowering inflammation, topical bromelain creates better conditions for new, healthy skin to grow. This can shorten overall healing time for wounds that are slow to close or prone to infection from accumulated debris. Sports injuries (topical swelling): Athletes sometimes apply bromelain creams or gels to sore, swollen muscles and joints after sprains or strains. The enzyme helps break down inflammatory fluid in the area, easing discomfort and puffiness more quickly than rest alone. Facial swelling after dental or cosmetic procedures: Topical bromelain applied around the cheeks or jaw after dental procedures or cosmetic treatments may help reduce post-procedure swelling and tenderness. Its protein-digesting action targets the inflammatory proteins responsible for puffiness.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
