Helps

What does L-arginine help with? High blood pressure: By boosting nitric oxide production, L-arginine helps blood vessels relax and widen, which can meaningfully lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Clinical trials in people with hypertension have shown consistent reductions, making it one of its most evidence-backed uses. Erectile dysfunction (ED): Erections depend on nitric oxide signaling to increase blood flow to penile tissue. L-arginine supplementation — especially when paired with compounds like Pycnogenol or L-citrulline — has shown real improvements in erectile function for men with mild-to-moderate ED, particularly those with low baseline nitric oxide. Exercise performance and endurance: Better blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients reach working muscles. Some studies show L-arginine supplementation can improve time-to-exhaustion, reduce the oxygen cost of exercise, and support modest gains in strength — though effects are more pronounced in non-elite athletes. Heart disease and angina: In people with coronary artery disease, improved nitric oxide availability helps relax narrowed arteries and ease chest pain (angina). Clinical research has shown L-arginine can reduce angina episodes and improve exercise tolerance in cardiac patients, though it is not a replacement for medical treatment. Poor circulation: L-arginine has been studied in peripheral artery disease (PAD), where reduced blood flow causes leg pain during walking. Supplementation has shown improvements in walking distance and pain-free exercise in some trials, supporting better perfusion in the extremities. Diabetes and insulin sensitivity: Nitric oxide plays a role in how cells respond to insulin and take up glucose. Some clinical evidence suggests L-arginine can improve insulin sensitivity and support healthier blood sugar regulation, particularly in people with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Sexual function in women: Nitric oxide is important for female sexual arousal too, by increasing blood flow to genital tissue. Topical and oral L-arginine preparations have shown improvements in sexual satisfaction and arousal in some controlled trials involving women with sexual dysfunction. Wound healing and recovery: L-arginine is essential for collagen synthesis and immune cell activity, both critical to wound repair. Clinical nutrition research — especially in surgical and burn patients — shows that arginine-enriched formulas support faster healing and lower infection rates. Immune support: L-arginine fuels the activity of immune cells, including T-lymphocytes, which fight infection. Arginine depletion is common during serious illness, and supplementation in clinical settings has been linked to better immune function and reduced recovery time.

Quick Facts

  • What it is: A semi-essential amino acid your body uses to make nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes and widens blood vessels.
  • Main uses: Most commonly taken to support heart health, blood pressure, exercise performance, and sexual function in men and women.
  • Best for: High blood pressure, Erectile dysfunction, Exercise performance
  • Active ingredients: L-arginine, Nitric oxide (NO) precursor
  • Forms: Capsule, Tablet, Powder, IV solution (clinical), Liquid
  • Time to effect: Blood flow and exercise effects may appear within 1–2 hours; longer-term benefits (blood pressure, ED) typically take 2–4 weeks of consistent use.
  • Side effects: Generally well-tolerated at moderate doses; higher amounts can cause digestive upset, and it should be avoided by people with certain heart or herpes conditions.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
