Burning down there hours after pooping
You went to the bathroom a while ago. Now there is a hot, raw sting down there. It can last for hours, long after you left the toilet.
A small tear in the skin of the anus can cause this. Doctors call it an anal fissure. The tear stings as stool passes, and the muscle around it then tightens and aches.
Hard, dry stool is the most common cause. Straining, loose stools that go on for days, or childbirth can also tear the skin. The tear is often tiny, even when the burn is not.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the burning lasts more than six weeks, or keeps coming back. Go sooner for fever, pus, a lump, or swelling that spreads. Heavy bleeding, dark or tarry stool, weight loss, or new bowel changes also need a look.
Below are remedies people use for anal fissures, drawn from our reviewed list. Each has a grade for the research behind it, not a promise of results. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start anything new.
