Epimedium is a genus of leafy plants native to China and parts of Asia, with over 60 species used interchangeably in Traditional Chinese Medicine under the name Yin Yang Huo. Its common nickname 'Horny Goat Weed' reportedly comes from an ancient Chinese goat herder who noticed his flock became more sexually active after grazing on the plant. It has been a cornerstone of TCM tonics for sexual vitality, kidney energy, and bone strength for centuries.

The main active compound, icariin, works by gently inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5 — the same enzyme targeted by prescription erectile dysfunction medications, just much more mildly. This supports healthy blood flow. Icariin also mimics some effects of estrogen in bone tissue, helping slow bone breakdown, and appears to support testosterone signaling in both men and women.

Standardized extracts (10–40% icariin) are the most researched and reliable form. Capsules and tablets made from these extracts offer consistent dosing. Powders can be mixed into drinks.
