What is Chyawanprash? Chyawanprash is one of the oldest and most revered formulations in Ayurvedic medicine, documented in ancient texts including the Charaka Samhita over 2,000 years ago. It is a synergistic blend of amla as its base ingredient combined with dozens of herbs, spices, ghee, sesame oil, and honey, creating a dark, jam-like paste with a sweet, sour, and spicy taste. It is considered a rasayana — an Ayurvedic category of rejuvenating tonics meant to promote longevity, vitality, and whole-body resilience. How does Chyawanprash work? Its primary driver is amla, one of the most vitamin C-rich foods on the planet, which provides powerful antioxidant protection and supports immune cell activity. The combination of adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and shatavari helps the body manage stress and maintain hormonal balance, while respiratory herbs like pippali and giloy are traditionally used to clear airways and fight infection. Ghee and sesame oil act as bioavailability enhancers, helping fat-soluble compounds from the herbs absorb more effectively. What forms does Chyawanprash come in? The traditional paste form is the most complete and bioavailable way to take Chyawanprash, as the fat-soluble compounds in the herbs are already processed with ghee and sesame oil. Capsule and tablet forms are more convenient and avoid the sugar content of the paste, though the synergistic matrix of the traditional formulation may be partially lost. Granule or powder forms dissolved in warm milk are a middle-ground option common in modern Ayurvedic practice. Where it comes from: According to the Charaka Samhita, Chyawanprash was originally created for the sage Chyawan to restore his youth and vitality — lending the formula its name. It has been continuously used across the Indian subcontinent for over two millennia and remains one of the best-selling Ayurvedic products worldwide today. Its formulation is standardized by the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, with amla as the required primary ingredient.

Helps

What does Chyawanprash help with? Weak immune system and frequent illness: Chyawanprash is best known as an immune tonic. The combination of amla's vitamin C and antioxidants with immune-activating herbs like giloy and ashwagandha helps the body build stronger defenses against colds, flu, and recurring infections. Regular use appears to reduce how often people get sick and shorten recovery time. Respiratory infections and congestion: Several herbs in the formula — especially pippali, kantakari, and giloy — have been used for centuries to support clear, healthy airways. They help thin mucus, ease congestion, and soothe inflamed bronchial passages, making Chyawanprash particularly valued during cold and flu season or for people prone to chest infections. Low energy and chronic fatigue: The adaptogenic herbs in Chyawanprash, particularly ashwagandha and shatavari, help the body produce and sustain energy more efficiently by supporting adrenal function and reducing the drain that chronic stress puts on the body. Many users report a gradual but noticeable improvement in stamina and daily energy levels after several weeks. Stress and mental burnout: Ashwagandha and brahmi are two of the formula's key stress-fighting components. They help regulate the body's stress response, support healthy cortisol levels, and promote a calm, focused mental state — without sedation. This makes Chyawanprash a popular daily tonic for people managing high-demand lifestyles. Poor digestion and sluggish gut: Warming spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and pippali stimulate digestive fire (agni in Ayurvedic terms), helping the stomach break down food more effectively and reducing bloating, gas, and sluggishness after meals. Amla also acts as a gentle gut tonic that supports healthy bowel regularity. Skin aging and dullness: Amla is one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants, and its vitamin C content directly supports collagen production, which keeps skin firm and elastic. Regular consumption may help reduce visible signs of aging, improve skin tone, and give a healthy glow from within. Anemia and low iron absorption: Vitamin C dramatically improves the body's ability to absorb non-heme (plant-based) iron. Amla's extremely high vitamin C content, delivered alongside iron-containing herbs in the formula, makes Chyawanprash a traditional support for building healthy blood — particularly valued for women and children. Brain fog and poor concentration: Brahmi and ashwagandha are well-known Ayurvedic nootropics that support memory, focus, and mental clarity. These herbs work best over time, with regular use gradually improving cognitive sharpness and reducing the mental fatigue that leads to brain fog. Weak lungs and breathing difficulty: Chyawanprash has long been recommended in Ayurveda for people with weak respiratory systems, including those recovering from chest illness or dealing with mild asthma. Bronchial-supportive herbs in the formula help open airways and strengthen lung tissue over time with consistent use. Seasonal allergies: The anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties of giloy, amla, and ashwagandha may help calm an overactive immune response that drives allergy symptoms. Traditional use and emerging research suggest Chyawanprash can reduce the frequency and severity of seasonal allergic reactions.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
