What is Bi Yan Pian? Bi Yan Pian is a time-tested Chinese herbal tablet formula that has been used for centuries to treat nasal and sinus conditions. Its name translates literally to 'nose inflammation tablet,' and it combines roughly 10–15 herbs chosen to clear the sinuses, reduce inflammation, and support healthy nasal breathing. It remains one of the most popular over-the-counter sinus remedies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinics worldwide. How does Bi Yan Pian work? The herbs in this formula work together to reduce swelling in the nasal passages, thin mucus so it drains more easily, and calm the immune overreaction that drives allergy symptoms. Xanthium fruit and Magnolia flower are the lead herbs specifically chosen for opening nasal congestion, while cooling herbs like Forsythia and Wild Chrysanthemum help lower inflammation and clear heat — the TCM term for the irritation and infection that drive sinus trouble. Schisandra berry helps the body moderate its allergic response. What forms does Bi Yan Pian come in? Bi Yan Pian is most commonly sold as small compressed tablets taken several times daily. Some Chinese pharmacies carry it as concentrated granules that dissolve in hot water, or as traditional honey pills (wan). The tablet form is most widely available outside China and is the easiest to dose accurately. Where it comes from: This formula has roots in classical TCM texts dating back several centuries and was codified in its modern tablet form by Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturers during the 20th century. It draws from earlier formulas designed to treat 'Bi Yuan' (nasal deep-source, i.e., sinusitis) and 'Bi Qiu' (nasal congestion from wind-cold or wind-heat invasion). It remains an official formula recognized in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

Helps

What does Bi Yan Pian help with? Nasal congestion and stuffiness: The lead herbs Xanthium fruit and Magnolia flower bud work directly to open up swollen nasal passages, making it easier to breathe through your nose. Many users notice meaningful relief within a few days of starting the formula. Seasonal allergies (hay fever): Several herbs in the formula — especially Magnolia flower and Schisandra berry — help dial down the immune system's overreaction to pollen and other allergens. This can reduce sneezing, itching, and that constant drip that makes allergy season miserable. Chronic sinusitis: When sinuses stay inflamed week after week, Bi Yan Pian's combination of anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial herbs can help break that cycle. It works best as a sustained course of several weeks rather than a one-off fix. Acute sinus infections: The cooling, infection-clearing herbs in the formula — Forsythia, Wild Chrysanthemum, and Phellodendron — are traditionally used for the inflamed, feverish stage of a sinus infection. They are not a replacement for antibiotics in severe bacterial infections but can support recovery in milder cases. Runny nose and post-nasal drip: By reducing nasal mucosal swelling and thinning thick mucus, the formula helps mucus drain properly rather than pooling in the sinuses or dripping down the throat. Licorice root and Platycodon help soothe irritated mucous membranes along the way. Sinus headache and pressure: The pressure headaches that come with blocked sinuses often ease as the formula helps the sinuses drain and the local inflammation decreases. Users typically report this as one of the more noticeable early benefits. Allergic rhinitis: Clinical use and emerging research both support Bi Yan Pian for allergic rhinitis — the year-round or seasonal version of a constantly runny, itchy, congested nose. It addresses both the immediate symptoms and some of the underlying inflammatory drivers. Loss of smell from nasal blockage: When a blocked nose is the main reason someone can't smell properly, clearing that congestion with Bi Yan Pian can help restore normal smell. This is most effective when the loss is functional (blockage-related) rather than nerve-related.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
